The Kent State cross country teams prepare for their first out-of-state competition when they head to Notre Dame for the Joe Piane Invitational on Friday. The meet will be held at Burke Golf Course.
The Golden Flashes will compete in the Gold Division races. The women's 5K is scheduled to start at 11:50 a.m. and the men's 8K will follow at 12:30 p.m.
PREVIEWING THE FLASHES
After sending six runners to the YSU Invitational last week, Kent State will have the entire squad in action at Notre Dame.
First-year runners have led the way so far, with Michael Hanselman being the only runner to finish top-10 in each of the first two races. Hanselman finished in his debut at the Wooster Invitational and then took ninth at the All-Ohio Classic. Tanner Smith, Owen Kelly and Caleb Wilcox joined him as the team's four top finishers in those two races.
On the women's side, freshman Camille Dunifer was the top performer at the All-Ohio Classic and finished in 22:47.7 for 18th place. Graduate student Grace Smith and junior Ella McCollom have also been top runners for Kent State early on. McCollom opened the season with a first-place showing at the Wooster Invitational, becoming the first Flash to win a women's race since 2015.
