NOTRE DAME, Ind. – The Kent State Herb Page men's golf team began its penultimate tournament of the Fall on Monday with the opening two rounds of the Fighting Irish Classic contested at Warren Golf Course. The Golden Flashes recorded a 19-over-par 299 in round one, followed by a 9-over-par 289 in round two to sit in 15th place among the 16 teams competing at 28-over-par.
The bright spot of the day for Kent State was the play of Nolan Haynes. The sophomore, who had the Flashes' best finish in the team's previous outing at the Blessings Collegiate Invitational, posted a 1-over-par 71 in round one before firing an even-par 70 in round two. At 1-over-par through 36 holes, Haynes is tied for 22nd place among the 84 golfers competing ahead of tomorrow's final round.
Ben MacLean opened the day with a 5-over-par 75 in the opening round, before improving with a 2-over-par 72 in the day's second 18. One of just two seniors on the Kent State roster, MacLean is tied for 60th place entering round three on Monday. The freshman duo of Liam Curtis and Christoffer Leuenhagen are each tied for 73rd at 11-over-par, while Darcy Hogg is tied for 76th at 12-over-par after round two.
National power North Carolina leads a very strong field at the Fighting Irish Classic through two rounds. At 11-under-par, the Tarheels lead second-placed Louisville by three strokes.
Elsewhere on Monday, Kent State had three individuals competing at the Tom Tontimonia Invitational hosted by Cleveland State. James Newton had the best day among the trio, tied for tenth place at 1-over-par after rounds of 71 and 72. He is ahead of Ramiro Acevedo by just one stroke, as the Argentine sits tied for 17th at 2-over-par. Completing the trio of Golden Flashes in the event, Connor Malicki is tied for 34th place at 5-over-par.
Action at both the Fighting Irish Classic and the Tom Tontimonia Invitational is set to wrap up with a pair of round threes on Tuesday.
