Kent State Posts Walk-Off Victory Over UMass in Opening Weekend Finale

BUIES CREEK, N.C. – Kent State scored a pair of runs in the bottom of the seventh for a 10-9 victory over UMass on Sunday at the Camel Stampede.
This was the second walk-off win for the Golden Flashes (2-3) during opening weekend, previously beating East Tennessee State in 11 innings on Friday.
Trailing 3-0 entering the bottom of the second, Kent State plated eight for its highest-scoring inning of the season. With the bases loaded, a single by redshirt sophomore Kendal Leitner brought home junior Carley Penner to get the Flashes on the board. Sophomore Aaralyn Nogay then sent a grounder to the right side of the field for the second out in the frame, scoring junior Kam Utendorf. Senior Delaney Robeson followed with a double down the left field line for a 4-3 lead and then scored on a single by senior Katie Jo Moery. The Flashes loaded the bases again and senior Savannah Wing cleared them with a double to make it 8-3.
UMass scored a pair of runs in the third, fifth and seventh innings to go ahead 9-8.
Wing reached on catcher's interference to start the bottom of the seventh and scored on a throwing error after Utendorf executed a sac bunt. Kent State was able load the bases again, and an error allowed Utendorf to score the winning run.
Senior Delaney Nagy (1-2) earned her first victory in a Flashes uniform.
Kent State will head to Coastal Carolina for the second weekend of the season and play five games as part of the Battle at the Beach from Feb. 14-16.
