KENT, Ohio – After finishing the MAC season undefeated and clinching the outright conference regular season title, the Kent State gymnastics team is set to close regular season competition in Columbus on Sunday. The Flashes will take part in a quad meet featuring the Buckeyes, Pitt, and West Virginia set to begin at 2 p.m.
ABOUT THE FLASHES
Kent State clinched the outright MAC regular season championship as well as an undefeated home and conference record with a win over Ball State last Sunday. The Flashes posted their highest score of the season to defeat the Cardinals 196.400-195.875. Charlie Behner finished second on vault, leading Kent State with a 9.850 in rotation one. The Flashes recorded their third consecutive score of 49.000 or better on bars in rotation two with a 49.025. Behner and Brynne Tsipis led the way with a pair of 9.850s to finish tied for first in the event. The Flashes posted a new season high on beam in rotation three by earning a 49.125. A stunning routine by Heidi Schultz earned a 9.925 to lead the Flashes, the joint-highest individual score across all events this season. Ashley Morgan also set a new career high in the event with a 9.850. Kent State stepped into another gear during their fourth rotation on the floor, posting a 49.375 to set a new season high team score across all events. All six gymnasts in the Flashes' lineup earned scores of 9.825, led by Alyssa Guns' fifth score of 9.900 or better this season. Behner, Morgan, and Gabby Riley each posted 9.875s, matching or setting new career highs for each, while freshman Jersey Bingman also earned a new career high with a 9.850.
Despite already claiming the regular season conference crown, Kent State still has a lot to compete for. The Flashes currently sit outside of the top 36 NQS scores, the mark needed to qualify as a team for NCAA regionals, at 41st in the country. Kent State will look to improve on their current NQS of 195.415 in their final two meets: Sunday's quad meet at Ohio State and the MAC Championship next weekend.
SCOUTING OHIO STATE
The Buckeyes enter Sunday's meet at 3-10 overall and 2-7 in conference. Ohio State sits 23rd nationally with a 196.270 NQS, with a high score of 196.650 in a quad meet on March 2.
SCOUTING PITT
The Panthers are 4-7 ahead of Sunday's meet after finishing 0-6 in ACC competition. Kent State defeated Pitt on February 28 in the MAC Center 195.925-195.650. The Panthers have participated in one meet since then, defeating West Virginia 196.575-196.275, their highest score of the season. Pitt currently sits 44th nationally with an NQS of 195.345.
SCOUTING WEST VIRGINIA
West Virginia is 3-12 ahead of Sunday's meet after finishing 0-6 in the Big 12. Despite the record, the Mountaineers own the second-highest NQS of the four teams competing as they sit 38th nationally with a 195.470. They posted their highest score of the season last Sunday at Pitt with a 196.275. The Flashes recorded a road win against West Virginia earlier this season, outscoring the Mountaineers 193.775-192.325.
SERIES HISTORY
The Buckeyes lead the all-time series with Kent State 45-12-1 and hold an eight-meet win streak over the Flashes. The last Kent State victory in the series came in 2011, when the Flashes earned a 195.450-195.350 victory over Ohio State.
Kent State improved to 23-14 all-time against Pitt with their win in the MAC Center earlier this season. The Flashes have won three consecutive meets against the Panthers, with their last loss to Pitt coming in 2018.
Despite losing to the Flashes earlier this season, West Virginia leads the all-time series between the schools 25-5. Kent State snapped an eight-meet losing streak to the Mountaineers with a 193.775-192.325 win in January.
