MYRTLE BEACH, S.C. – The Kent State men's golf team concluded their second tournament of the Spring on Tuesday with the third round of the General Hackler Championship contested at the Dunes Golf & Beach Club. The Flashes had their best round of the week in round three, firing a 5-under-par 283 to improve to 3-over-par and climb three spots on the final team standings to finish in sixth of the 16 teams competing.
No. 1 Auburn finished atop the field at 33-under-par with an outstanding 19-under-par 269 in round three. Louisville, Duke, Wake Forest, and Baylor were the other four teams to finish below par and ahead of Kent State in the competition.
The Flashes' best round on Tuesday was recorded by Bryce Reed, who concluded his tournament with a 4-under-par 68. The senior fired four birdies and an eagle at hole no. 16, with just two bogeys, to improve his 54-hole score to 2-over-par, good enough for a tied 33rd finish. Reed's final round builds upon a strong start to the Spring for Reed, who has now shot under par in four of his six rounds since the new year.
The highest individual finisher after 54 holes for Kent State was Isaiah Ibit, who cracked the top 30 after an even-par 72 in round three. The freshman fired four birdies to counteract four bogeys in his final round to conclude the tournament at 1-over-par at tied for 28th. Ibit's final round 72 is his fifth round of par or better in the Spring and 11th in the 2024-2025 season.
Jordan Gilkison was the third and final Flash to finish the General Hackler Championship inside the top 40, also firing an even-par 72 to conclude his tournament at 3-over-par. Gilkison's two rounds of even-par this week helped him to a tied 38th finish and improved his season tally of rounds of par or better to 15.
Ramiro Acevedo finished his week strongly with a 1-under-par 71 on Tuesday. The freshman from Argentina fired five birdies in round three to improve his 54-hole score to 7-over-par, finishing tied for 54th. Acevedo's final round was his seventh round of par or better in his inaugural collegiate season for the Flashes.
Nolan Haynes and Edvin Backstrom each tied for 42nd at the conclusion of the tournament after each posting final scores of 4-over-par. Backstrom, who competed as an individual, had his best round of the week on Tuesday with an even-par 72. After leading the Flashes through 36 holes, Haynes concluded his tournament with a 4-over-par 76.
The Flashes have a quick turnaround, as they will return to South Carolina once again next weekend to take part in the Hootie at Bulls Bay, beginning on Sunday, March 23.
