Jones Stellar as Flashes Take Series Opener

KENT- The Kent State Golden Flashes team took the series opener against the Toledo Rockets, 4-2, Friday evening in Kent.

After first pitch of the game was pushed back to 6 p.m. due to rain in the area Kent State starting pitcher Gavin Jones delivered his best start of the 2025 season. The right-hander went 7 innings and allowed just two runs on two hits while striking out six Rockets.

Toledo would score open the scoring in the top of the third inning on a home run to right field.

Kent State would score the next four runs unanswered. Jake Casey would get the Flashes on the board in the bottom of the fifth with a two-RbI single through the right side. Brody Williams would come in to score in the sixth on one of Toledo's three errors. In the bottom of the seventh Sawyer Solitaria extended the Flashes lead to 4-1 on a single up the middle.

Jones would face one batter in the eighth and then pass the ball to the Flashes' closer Peyton Cariaco. Toledo would get one run in the frame, but Cariaco would limit the dame to just that.

With one out in the bottom of the ninth the Rockets hit a single into the gap in right-center field that Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe would pick up and fire at second base and could throw out the Toledo runner trying to stretch the hit into a double. Cariaco would record the last out without any troubles en route to his seventh save of the season.

On Deck for the Flashes

Kent State and Toledo will face off for game two of their three game set on Saturday with a 3 p.m. first pitch. The first 200 fans into the ballpark will receive a Kent State Baseball mini bat.
