MUNCIE, Ind. – All five golfers in the Flashes' lineup sit in the top ten as Kent State holds a seven-stroke lead after Sunday's MAC Women's Golf Championship opening round. The Flashes fired a 1-over-par 289 as a team to sit atop the ten teams competing at Delaware Country Club.
Kent State's closest competitor after 18 holes of play is Bowling Green, which posted an 8-over-par 296 on Sunday. The Flashes will look to maintain their lead through rounds two and three to defend the team's MAC title and extend the streak to 26 consecutive MAC Championships.
The Flashes were led in round one by the 2024 MAC Championship medalist, Leon Takagi. The junior is one of just four golfers under par through one round of play after carding a 1-under-par 71 on Sunday. She tallied four birdies to just three bogeys to match her lowest round of the season. Takagi is tied for second among the 50 golfers competing, four strokes behind the current individual leader.
Gracie Larsen posted the lowest score of the three freshmen making their MAC Championship debuts for Kent State on Sunday. She fired an even-par 72, highlighted by four birdies in her first five holes of the day, to sit tied for fifth through 18 holes. It is Larsen's seventh round of par or better this season as she looks to secure the first top-five finish of her collegiate career.
Kent State's lineup was rounded out by three players tied for ninth place at 1-over-par after round one on Sunday. Isabella Goyette had a consistent opening round featuring two birdies and 13 pars as she looks to secure the first top-ten finish of her freshman season. Aryn Matthews tallied three birdies on the day as she is also in a strong position to chase her first top-ten finish of the season.
Veronika Kedronova was the third Kent State golfer to post a 1-over-par 73 on Sunday. The star sophomore recovered from a triple bogey on hole no. 14 with a birdie to close the day on hole no. 18 to round out an impressive day across the board for the Flashes. Kedronova is seeking her eighth top-ten finish in what has been an outstanding season.
