KENT, Ohio –– Kent State Athletics achieved its highest-ever Academic Progress Rate (APR), setting a new department record with a single-year APR of 994 for the 2023-24 academic year. This remarkable achievement qualifies the department for the NCAA's Academic Unit Fund.
"Achieving a department record 994 single-year APR score is an exceptional accomplishment," said Vice President and Director of Athletics Randale L. Richmond. "In that calculation, having 11 of our 19 programs earn a perfect score shows a commitment to academic excellence and is a testament to our well rounded student-athletes, dedicated academic staff, and hardworking coaches. I'm incredibly proud of our teams carrying on our mission to graduate student-athletes, boldly prepared for life after sports, and win championships."
The impressive 994 APR represents the average of all single-year rates across Kent State's athletic programs. In an outstanding display of academic achievement, eleven Golden Flashes teams recorded perfect 1,000 scores for the 2023-24 academic year: baseball, men's cross country, men's golf, women's basketball, women's cross country, field hockey, women's golf, women's gymnastics, women's Lacrosse, softball, and women's soccer.
Additionally, five programs maintained a perfect 1,000 multiyear APR rate: men's golf, women's basketball, women's cross country, women's gymnastics, and softball.
"Achieving a record-breaking 994 APR score is a testament to our student-athletes' dedication and commitment to academic excellence," said Associate Athletic Director for Student-Athlete Support Services Amy Densevich. "This accomplishment also highlights the incredible support of our coaches, administration, faculty, and academic support team in fostering a strong culture of academic success at Kent State. Congratulations to our 11 teams that earned a perfect single-year score of 1,000 and the five teams that achieved a perfect multiyear rate of 1,000."
The department-wide improvement is further highlighted by fourteen teams that have either maintained or improved their single-year APR rates compared to the previous year. These programs include Baseball, Men's Cross Country, Football, Men's Golf, Men's Wrestling, Women's Basketball, Women's Cross Country, Field Hockey, Women's Golf, Gymnastics, Lacrosse, Softball, Soccer, and Women's Track and Field.
