KENT, Ohio-Â The Kent State soccer team opens up their home slate of the 2025 season on Sunday, facing-off against the Duquesne University Dukes at Zoeller Field at Dix Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
Last Time Out
The Golden Flashes won their season-opener on the road on Thursday night, defeating Cleveland State by a score of 1-0. It was a strong defensive outing for the Blue and Gold, holding the Vikings to no shots on goal and just three shots overall.Â
KSU scored the only goal of the game in the 25th-minute thanks to a goal from junior midfielder Samantha Miller, who was assisted by Junior forward Kiyomi McCausland. She was able to beat the Viking defense around the edge to get a shot off that was deflected; landing right in the vicinity of Miller.Â
Kent State's defense held strong in the second half, staving off chances from Cleveland State in the final minutes to help secure the victory for the Blue and Gold.
Scouting Duquesne
The Dukes come into Kent for their first game of the season; coming off a 9-7-1 campaign in 2024 which included a 4-2 win over the Flashes last September in Pittsburgh.Â
However, things will look a little different for Duquesne this year as Jessica Giegucz begins her first season as head coach for the squad. She previously spent the last 10 seasons at the helm with Division II Slippery Rock in Pennsylvania.
On the pitch, Duquesne returns five starters from a year ago, including four of their top six scorers. Leading the charge as a returning scorer is senior forward Brianna Moore. She recorded eight goals and two assists last season, including a two-goal and one-assist performance against Kent State.Â
Maya Matesa and Mackenzie Muir are also names to look out for on Sunday for the Dukes. They combined for 26 points in 2024.
Series History
Sunday will mark the 6th meeting all-time between Kent State and Duquesne, including a matchup for the third straight season. The Flashes hold a narrow lead in the all-time series 3-2, as they try to avenge a loss from the Dukes a season ago.
Up Next
Following Duquesne, the Blue and Gold will travel to Northwestern University for one of their toughest tests of the season. That contest with the Wildcats will get underway Sunday, August 24th, at 1 p.m.
