Kent, OHIO- The Kent State Soccer team turned in their best offensive outing in the last few seasons as the Flashes cruised to a 5-1 victory over Youngstown State University at home Thursday night; scoring all five unanswered in the process.
The Penguins got on the board first as Camille Bultel put one away off the crossbar after handling a pass from Chloe Weiland to give the visitors the lead early in the 10th-minute.
After that, it was all Flashes, as the offensive barrage began just a minute later as junior midfielder Samantha Miller placed the ball beautifully on a corner-kick right in front of the goal for senior defender Ally Breitschuh to score on a header.
In the 21st-minute, senior defender Kelsey Salopek scored right in front of the net thanks to a great assist from the opposite side of the field from her teammate, sophomore forward Jules Dolinski to give the Blue and Gold a 2-1 lead at the half.
Shortly after the halftime break, KSU kept pouring on as sophomore forward Addy Cusick stole the ball away from the Penguins and took it all the way herself to the goal to give her team a two-score lead.Â
A similar goal was scored in the 72nd-minute as freshman forward Mia Cleroux went coast-to-coast right past the YSU defense to bury the ball in the back of the net.
Three minutes later, the Flashes capitalized on their final opportunity of the night as freshman midfielder Maya Justice passed it off to fellow freshman Isabelle Leofanti who was running parallel to Justice to connect on the goal that brought the score to 5-1 which proved to be the final. It was the first time since 2021 that Kent State had a five-goal performance as they took down Canisius 6-0.
The Golden Flashes dominated in all offensive categories including shots by a tally of 19-8 with a 14-3 advantage with shots on target. They also cruised to a 9-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Kent State junior goalkeeper Leah Shaffer added another two saves to her name while Penguins goalie Nikki Whyte recorded nine saves in the first start of her career.
