
Another Big Performance from McGuire Leads Kent State in Battle Against Texas Tech

BOCA RATON, Fla. โ Outside hitter Mackenzie McGuire posted 26 kills against Texas Tech on Saturday as Kent State lost 3-1 (23-25, 22-25, 25-23, 22-25) in the final contest at the FAU Invitational in a close battle in which all sets were decided by three points or fewer. The back-and-forth contest featured 30 ties and 17 lead changes.
McGuire earned a spot on the all-tournament team and had at least 17 kills in all three matches. Her 26 on Saturday are the most by a Mid-American Conference attacker during opening weekend
After coming up just short in each of the first two sets, the Golden Flashes (0-3) fell behind 10-4 to start the third. Timeout was called to regroup, and a 4-0 run followed. A kill by McGuire put Kent State ahead 14-13, and the lead grew to five at 23-18. The Red Raiders scored the next four points to get within one but followed with an attack just beyond the endline. A service error put the Flashes back in serve-receive, and sophomore Nadia Miller found the floor with a tip over the block on a slide to take the set, 25-23.
Kent State was the first to 15 in the fourth set, but Texas Tech responded with a 6-2 run to go ahead by a pair. The Flashes evened it at 19-19 before the Red Raiders used a 6-3 run to close it out.
Miller had one of her best performances in a Kent State uniform and finished with career-highs in points (15.5), kills (10) and total blocks (6). Junior Christina Vigil recorded 48 assists and added eight digs.
Sophomore Hailey Brenner tallied a career-high 16 digs and added two more aces to finish the weekend with seven.
Kent State will play three matches in the Baltimore area next weekend with contests to be played at both Morgan State and Towson.
