TOLEDO, Ohio – The Kent State volleyball team fell to host Toledo, 3-0 (24-26, 19-25, 17-25), in its Mid-American Conference opener on Thursday.
Senior Mackenzie McGuire recorded 11 kills to tie for the most by any player in the match, but the Golden Flashes (5-7, 0-1 MAC) totaled just 27 as a team compared to 46 by the Rockets. Junior Christina Vigil posted a double-double with 19 assists and team-high 12 digs.
Kent State used a four-point run, which ended with a kill by McGuire, to take a 21-20 lead late in a back-and-forth first set. Toledo responded with four in a row, but the Flashes fought back to tie it on another kill by McGuire, a Rockets attack error and block by redshirt sophomore Adalynn Ginley and Vigil. Toledo won the next two points to take the opener, 26-24.
A 6-1 run early by the host in the second set turned a one-point lead into a three-point deficit. Kent State won the next two points to get within 12-11, but the Rockets pulled away for a 25-19 victory.
After trailing 7-2 to start the third, the Flashes fought back to pull even at 15-15, but the host answered with four in a row to start a 10-2 run to close it out.
Kent State will be back in action on Friday at Bowling Green. First serve is scheduled for 6 p.m.
