KENT, Ohio – The Kent State Field Hockey team fell 2-3 in overtime to the Bellarmine Knights during Friday afternoon's home MAC contest.
The back-and-forth game was part of Kent State's Homecoming Weekend and was labeled as the field hockey team's Alumnae Day. Former Golden Flashes were recognized before the game in front of the fans and current team.
Bellarmine came into the game struggling offensively, previously getting shutout five times this season. However, the Knights turned a corner against the Golden Flashes, tying their season-high for goals in a game with three.
Despite the three goals, Kent State's offense actually outperformed Bellarmine's in many regards, doubling them up in shots and tallying four more penalty corners. However, the biggest statistical difference was the shot percentage with Bellarmine's at .273 and Kent State's at .087. The Knights' better execution on shots made up for their lack of offensive possession control and kept them in the game to force it to overtime.
Kent State started the scoring at the 10-minute mark in the first quarter when Eva Usoz nailed a wide-open shot for her 6thgoal of the season. Usoz had another great game with a game-leading six shots. The Golden Flashes took the 1-0 lead into the second quarter.
Bellarmine struck back with a goal of their own two minutes into the second quarter as Brooke Buchanan hit her second goal of the season off an Amy Stripling assist. Buchanan has the second most points on the team with five as she's also been a solid passer for the Knights this season. Bellarmine then took the lead at the beginning of the second half as Dominique Hudson scored her second goal of the season off an Annie McCarthy crossing pass.
The third quarter provided Kent State with some of their best offensive opportunities of the game as they had six shots. Senior midfielder Sophia Livingston was able to capitalize on one of the opportunities with her second goal of the season, tying the game at two apiece heading into the final frame.
The fourth quarter saw both teams have an even amount of opportunities with nothing to show for them on the scoreboard. The grueling conference battle headed into overtime as the game's nervous and excited energy reached an all-time high.
Kent State got a penalty corner five minutes into overtime. Ryli Zee passed the ball into Emily Robertson who's shot was wide of the net. Maybritt Duwel gathered the rebound and took a slapshot herself that was blocked by the Knights.
After a few minutes of back-and-forth action, Kent State received another penalty corner chance. Zee once again got the ball in the circle, this time for the two Golden Flashes' goal scorers. However, both Sophia Livingston and Eva Usoz' shots were blocked by the Bellarmine defense.
The Knights quickly went on the offensive attack themselves in the 11th minute of overtime, racing down the field for an eventual corner opportunity. Brooke Buchanan took the corner and passed it to the team's leading scorer, Luna Tuncay. The Fulda, Germany native shot and scored her third goal of the season to give the Knights the win.
