HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. — Kent State battled back from a nine-point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter and pulled even in the final minute but was unable to take the lead and lost to host Northern Kentucky, 61-58, on Saturday.
The Golden Flashes (0-2) trailed 28-25 at halftime despite shooting less than 30 percent from the field in the opening 20 minutes.
After the Norse took its largest lead of the day, 37-25, Kent State got on the scoreboard for the first time in the second half on two free throws by fifth-year Corynne Hauser with 6:19 remaining in the third period. Extended defensive pressure created six more turnovers in the quarter as Kent State trimmed its deficit to six late, but a buzzer-beating three-point by Gaia Castelli gave NKU a 47-38 lead after 30 minutes.
Junior Talia Harris knocked down a trio of mid-range shots in the opening minutes of the fourth, as the Flashes prevented the Norse from making a field goal in the first four minutes and got within 49-46.
That was as close as Kent State could get until junior Emory Klatt converted a traditional three-point play to make it 55-52 with 3:51 to play. A NKU free throw was the only scoring for either team for the next three minutes before freshman Whitney Stafford found the bottom of the net with a deep three-point shot with 47.7 on the clock to tie it at 56-56.
Following a free throw by the Norse to retake the lead, Stafford was unable to connect on a shot over the defense on a drive towards the basket. NKU made two more foul shots and Stafford's stepback three-point shot to tie it again was long and bounced off the back of the rim.
Klatt finished with 16 points to lead all scorers and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Hauser and Harris added 13 points and 12 points, respectively, to join her in double-figures.
The Flashes will return to action at the M.A.C. Center and host Duquesne on Saturday, Nov. 14.
