KENT, Ohio — Kent State lost to Troy, 89-78, as the Fran Recchia era officially tipped with a MAC-Sun Belt Challenge matchup inside of the M.A.C. Center on Monday.
The Golden Flashes (0-1) had five players with double-figures scoring performances in the 2026-27 opener. Senior Riley Rismiller led the way with 18 points and also grabbed a game-high nine rebounds. Fifth-year Corynne Hauser, junior Emory Klatt and freshman Sini Luukkonen finished with 12 points apiece, and freshman Whitney Stafford added 10.
The three-point line played a major role in the game's outcome. The visiting Trojans connected on 11 triples and shot 39.3 percent compared to 20.8 percent shooting and five makes for Kent State.
After trimming a six-point halftime deficit to three a little over three minutes into the third period, the Flashes went more than five minutes without scoring as Troy put together a 16-0 run. Down 22 with under a minute remaining in the quarter, a pair of rookies provided a spark entering the final 10 minutes. Luukkonen found Stafford for an open three from the wing and then grabbed a loose ball and drove the length of the court for a layup to make it 73-56.
Kent State battled back to make it a single-digit game twice during the fourth period but was unable to get closer than nine points.
The Flashes will be back in action on Saturday with a road contest at Northern Kentucky.
