ATHENS, Ohio — The Kent State women's basketball team trimmed a 24-point deficit to just six points with three minutes to play but was unable to complete the comeback in a 71-61 loss to Ohio on Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Flashes (11-13, 5-7 MAC) struggled to defend the three-point line early, as the Bobcats sank five from long range to lead 20-8 just five minutes into the game. Kent State improved on the defensive end during the second quarter but scored just six points in the period and trailed 44-21 at halftime.
Kent State scored the first five points for a strong start to the third quarter before falling behind 54-30 with 5:02 remaining in the period.
Sophomore Journey Hildebrand then sank a three-pointer as part of an 11-5 run to close the third. The Flashes maintained momentum by scoring the first six points in the fourth quarter and eventually extended the run to 27-9 after a free throw by junior Riley Rissmiller that trimmed the deficit to six with 3:01 still on the clock. The next field goal did not come until just five seconds remained as the deficit once again reached double-digits.
Junior Mya Babbitt led Kent State with 15 points and freshman Anna Campanelli added 12 points. Sophomore Emory Klatt grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds and senior Dionna Gray recorded 11 assists.
Kent State will host Northern Illinois for the annual Play4Kay game on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
