
Golden Flashes Split Series Closing Doubleheader at Buffalo

BUFFALO, N.Y. – Kent State Softball (12-13, 4-2 MAC) picked up another win in conference play on Saturday afternoon splitting to close their series with the University at Buffalo Bulls. The Golden Flashes mounted a comeback that fell short in game one falling 6-4 before exploding for seven runs to the win the final game 7-1.
Game 1: Buffalo 6, Kent State 4
Buffalo jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning before adding a run in the second to extend the advantage to 5-0.
Kent State battled back with four runs in the top of the third inning to cut the deficit to one run. Miley Anderson led off with a walk and Aaralyn Nogay followed with a single. Brynn Libler drew a walk to load the bases, and Caleigh Shaulis drew a walk to score Anderson and make it 5-1. Megan Claerhout delivered a two-run single to score Nogay and Libler to cut the deficit to 5-3. After Leilani Johnson grounded out to advance runners, Ashlyn Porter plated Shaulis with an RBI single to center field to make it a one-run ballgame at 5-4
Buffalo added an insurance run in the fifth inning to extend the lead to 6-4.
Meadow Ferri recorded four strike outs in the loss. At the plate Nogay recorded a 3-for-4 performance. Claerhout finished 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs, while Porter went 1-for-3 with an RBI and Quinn added a 1-for-3 effort. Anderson drew a walk and scored a run, while Libler and Shaulis each drew two walks with Shaulis contributing an RBI.
Game 2: Kent State 7, Buffalo 1
Kent State grabbed an early lead in the top of the first inning when Libler led off with a solo home run to give the Golden Flashes a 1-0 advantage.
The Golden Flashes extended their lead to 2-0 in the second inning when Porter was hit by a pitch and advanced to second on a single by Gabby Quinn. Porter scored on a wild pitch later in the inning.
Buffalo cut the deficit to 2-1 in the bottom of the second with an RBI sacrifice fly.
Kent State responded as Porter led off with a single up the middle and scored two batters later when Ciara Camacho launched a two-run home run to extend the advantage to 4-1.
The Golden Flashes broke the game open in the fifth inning with a trio of runs. Libler drew a leadoff walk and Shaulis followed with a two-run home run to push the lead to 6-1. Claerhout doubled to center field and advanced to third on a passed ball before Porter delivered an RBI single to third base to score Claerhout and make it 7-1.
Riley Miller earned the win, working all seven innings and allowing one run on seven hits while inducing 12 ground ball outs.
Offensively, Claerhout led Kent State with a 2-for-4 performance including two doubles. Porter went 2-for-2 with an RBIs while Libler finished 1-for-3 with a home run, an RBI, and a walk. Shaulis was 1-for-3 with a home run, two RBI, and a walk, Camacho went 1-for-3 hitting her first collegiate home run notching two RBIs. Quinn added a 1-for-3 effort.
On Deck for the Flashes
Kent State will be back in action on Wednesday, March 25 hosting a double header vs. Mercyhurst University. First pitch times are scheduled for 2:00 p.m. and 4:00 p.m.
