
Kent State’s Comeback Falls Short in Series Opener at Miami (OH)

OXFORD, Ohio – Kent State Softball (14-14, 4-3 MAC) dropped their series opener on Friday afternoon at Miami (OH) University by a slim final score of 8-7. The Golden Flashes rallied to score four in the fifth and three in the seventh coming up just short in the ballgame.
Miami jumped out to an early lead with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. The RedHawks extended their advantage to 3-0 with a run in the second inning before adding two more runs in the fourth to build a 5-0 lead.
The Kent State bats came alive in the sixth inning to cut into the deficit. Brooke Aberle led off with a single up the middle and Aaralyn Nogay reached on a fielding error at second. Both runners advanced on a passed ball before Brynn Libler drew a walk to load the bases. Caleigh Shaulis cleared the bases with her first career grand slam home run to pull the Golden Flashes within a run at 5-4.
The RedHawks answered in the bottom of the sixth inning, scoring three runs including a three-run homer to extend the lead to 8-4.
The Golden Flashes mounted a rally attempt in the top of the seventh inning. Ciara Camacho drew a leadoff walk and Alex Trevena followed with a single to shortstop. Aberle drew a walk to load the bases and Nogay delivered a two-run single that advanced to second on a fielding error by the left fielder to score Trevena and Camacho cutting the Miami (OH) lead to two runs. Libler followed with an RBI single bringing home Aberle making it an 8-7 game. The RedHawks got out of the jam to end it edging Kent State by one run.
Shaulis led the Golden Flashes with a 2-for-4 performance including a double, and a home run for four RBIs. Nogay finished 1-for-4 with two RBIs, Libler went 1-for-3 with an RBI, and Claerhout added a 1-for-4 effort with a double. Trevena was 1-for-3, Aberle went 1-for-2 with a walk, and Camacho drew a walk as a pinch hitter.
On Deck for the Flashes
The Golden Flashes will play a doubleheader against Miami (OH) on Saturday, March 28 to wrap up the series. First pitch times are slated for 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m.
