Kent State Hosts St. Bonaventure for Midweek Matchup Wednesday

KENT, Ohio – Fresh off a successful home-opening weekend series against Rhode Island, the Golden Flashes welcome St. Bonaventure to Schoonover Stadium on Wednesday afternoon for a midweek non-conference contest. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m., marking the first-ever meeting between the two programs. Kent State comes in riding high at 8-3 and leading the MAC in ERA, WHIP, and wins percentage, while the Bonnies arrive at 4-6 following a mixed start to their season. Projected starting pitchers for both sides have not yet been announced.
Kent State Riding a Wave of Momentum
The Flashes have won three straight, sweeping Rhode Island in their home opener last weekend, and the program continues to build on what is shaping up to be a promising early season. Kent State ranks first in the MAC in ERA (3.96), WHIP (1.28), walks allowed per nine innings (2.88), and wins percentage (.727). Offensively, the Flashes have scored 82 runs through 11 games — second in the MAC — and rank 88th nationally in scoring at 7.5 runs per game.
The lineup has shown it can put up numbers in a hurry, and with the pitching staff finding its footing, this team looks increasingly dangerous as conference play approaches.
Solitaria Continues to Rake
There's no way to preview a Kent State game right now without leading with Sawyer Solitaria, and for good reason. The outfielder is one of the most productive hitters in the country through 11 games, batting .413 with six home runs, 11 RBI, and a team-leading 17 runs scored. He leads the MAC in hits (19) and total bases (39), ranks 2nd in the conference in home runs, and sits 1st in the MAC in runs scored. Nationally, he ranks 16th in home runs per game and 15th in total bases. Simply put, he's been one of the best hitters in college baseball so far in 2026, and Wednesday's game will be no different in terms of how opposing pitchers approach him.
The supporting cast has continued to develop. Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe leads the team with 12 RBI and has been a consistent presence in the lineup, hitting .289 with 11 runs scored. Brody Williams is batting .271 with two home runs and 11 RBI, and Kolton Schaller has quietly been one of the more productive hitters over the last week, slashing .259 with two home runs and nine RBI. Luke Matthews continues to reach base at a .352 clip and has been hit by a pitch five times, sixth-best in the MAC.
A Balanced St. Bonaventure Lineup
The Bonnies have been a competent offensive team through 10 games, hitting .259 as a team and scoring 45 runs. Their most consistent performer has been Chris Hoalcraft, who leads the team with a .375 batting average across 40 at-bats while playing a key role up the middle. Manuel Castro (.351, 2 HR) and Anthony Fernandez (.324, 8 RBI) give St. Bonaventure a legitimate middle-of-the-order punch. Antonio Cordeiro has driven in seven runs and provides balance from a contact-oriented approach.
The Bonnies do have some pop in the lineup, but their 18 errors in the field and a .948 fielding percentage that ranks 282nd nationally have been a liability. Kent State's disciplined offense, which has drawn 55 walks on the season, is well-positioned to take advantage of any lapses.
Kent State's Pitching Has Hit Its Stride
The Flashes' pitching staff has been among the best in the MAC over the last couple of weeks. Ciaran Caughey remains the staff's anchor with a 0.71 ERA across 12.2 innings and 17 strikeouts, leading the MAC in strikeouts per nine innings (12.08). Evan Holewinski has been a revelation out of the bullpen, posting a 1.64 ERA across 11 innings with an eye-popping 0.73 WHIP, best in the MAC. Easton Tumis has blossomed into one of the most reliable starters in the conference, going 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA and leading the MAC in strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.00). Brody Krzysiak, Nick Guidas, and Peyton Williams each have posted saves, giving Kent State a dependable late-inning bullpen.
With starting pitchers yet to be announced, this could be an opportunity for any number of arms to step up in a favorable midweek setting.
St. Bonaventure's Pitching Has Some Bright Spots
The Bonnies' staff carries a 4.02 ERA that ranks first in the Atlantic 10, a mark that will test Kent State's offense. Their best arm has been Nolan Feidt, who is 2-0 with a 1.76 ERA across 15.1 innings and leads the A-10 in victories. Enger Paulino (2.13 ERA, 13 strikeouts) has been solid as well, and David James (3.29 ERA) rounds out a rotation that has shown some real depth. The Bonnies have also issued 48 walks on the season, a 5.36 walks per nine innings rate, which could be exploited by a Kent State lineup that has shown tremendous patience at the plate all year.
The Bottom Line
On paper, this is a winnable game for Kent State at home, but St. Bonaventure is no pushover. The Bonnies' pitching staff leads the Atlantic 10 in ERA and will present a more legitimate challenge than Rhode Island did last weekend. That said, the Flashes' lineup, anchored by Solitaria and a deep, disciplined supporting cast, has the firepower to put up runs against anyone, and Kent State's own pitching staff has been sharp enough to keep most opponents in check.
A win on Wednesday would push the Flashes to 9-3 and keep the positive momentum rolling heading into their MAC opener versus Bowling Green this weekend in Schoonover Stadium.
