KENT, Ohio – The regular season takes on a new level of significance this weekend as Kent State opens Mid-American Conference play by hosting Bowling Green at Schoonover Stadium. First pitch Friday is set for 3 p.m., marking the beginning of the conference schedule for both programs. The Flashes bring one of the MAC's best records into the opener at 9-3, leading the conference in ERA, WHIP, walks allowed per nine innings, wins percentage, and fielding percentage. Bowling Green comes in at 2-8 after a difficult early slate, having allowed opponents to hit .390 against their pitching staff.
Kent State Hits Its Stride
The Flashes are playing their best baseball of the young season. After going 5-3 through a grueling early schedule that included road trips to No. 13 Tennessee and #2 LSU, Kent State has gone 4-0 at home, sweeping Rhode Island and picking up a midweek win over St. Bonaventure. The offense has come alive in that stretch, with the club scoring 96 runs through 12 games, which is second in the MAC.
The pitching staff has been equally impressive. Kent State leads the MAC in ERA (4.38), WHIP (1.34), strikeout-to-walk ratio (2.65), walks allowed per nine innings (3.06), and fielding percentage (.980). Simply put, this is a well-rounded team that is clicking on both sides of the ball heading into the conference opener.
Solitaria Remains Must-See Baseball
There's no bigger story on this roster than Sawyer Solitaria, who continues to put up numbers that are hard to believe. Through 12 games, the outfielder is batting .417 with six home runs, 12 RBI, and 17 runs scored, leading the MAC in hits (20) and total bases (40), and ranking first in the conference in runs scored. Nationally, he sits 16th in home runs, 20th in home runs per game, and 26th in total bases. He also ranks 50th nationally in runs scored, with his 17 runs pacing the entire MAC. The supporting cast has grown stronger with each passing week. Brody Williams is batting .294 with two home runs and 12 RBI, showing he can be a consistent middle-of-the-order presence. Micah Rienstra-Kiracofe (.262) leads the team with 13 RBI and has drawn 10 walks, ranking among the MAC leaders in on-base percentage. Kolton Schaller has emerged as one of the more pleasant surprises in the lineup, batting .267 with two home runs and 10 RBI in 11 games. Grady Mee (.281) continues to work counts and get on base, drawing eight walks and stealing five bags. Luke Matthews has quietly become one of the MAC's best table-setters, reaching base at a .367 clip thanks in large part to being hit by a pitch five times — third-best in the MAC.
Bowling Green has allowed opponents to hit .390 against their pitching staff, which is the worst mark in the MAC by a significant margin, and Kent State's lineup is poised to take full advantage.
Bowling Green Has Bright Spots Offensively
Despite a rough 2-8 start, the Falcons aren't without weapons. Sam Seidel has been their best all-around player, batting .378 with two home runs, six RBI, and a team-leading seven stolen bases. He ranks 54th nationally in stolen bases and has been one of the more dynamic players in the MAC through the early going. For Bowling Green, Vinny Salvione(.289) and Zack Horky (.229, 2 HR) provide some pop, while Anthony Mitta (.231) and Pauly Mancino (.257) round out a lineup that has shown some ability to put the ball in play.
One area where the Falcons have genuinely excelled is turning double plays — they rank 2nd in the MAC and 55th nationally with 10 in 10 games, and lead the MAC in double plays per game (1.00). Kent State's baserunners, who have been thrown out stealing at a higher-than-ideal rate this season (19-for-27), will need to be smart on the bases to avoid running into outs.
The Pitching Matchups
Friday — Caughey vs. Turner
Kent State sends its ace to the hill for the MAC opener, and it's hard to imagine a better scenario. Ciaran Caughey has been one of the best pitchers in the conference, carrying a 0.71 ERA across 12.2 innings with 17 strikeouts, which is the MAC's best strikeouts per nine innings mark at 12.08. He's been virtually untouchable in three starts and will be a massive mismatch against a Bowling Green lineup that ranks last in the MAC in batting average (.233) and on-base percentage (.307).
Bowling Green counters with Jacob Turner, their most experienced starter. Turner has made three starts and logged 14 innings with a 4.50 ERA, striking out 13. He's the most reliable arm in the Falcons' rotation, but the Flashes' lineup presents a significant challenge. This matchup heavily favors Kent State.
Saturday — Tumis vs. Kress
Easton Tumis has quietly become one of the best starters in the MAC, going 2-0 with a 2.30 ERA across 15.2 innings. He leads the MAC and ranks 53rd nationally in strikeout-to-walk ratio (8.00), and his 0.96 WHIP ranks fifth in the conference. His command has been elite as he's walked just one batter all season.
Nate Kress has posted a 5.40 ERA across 11.2 innings and attacks the strike zone with a 1.54 walks allowed per nine innings, which is the fifth-best mark in the MAC among qualifying pitchers.Â
Sunday — Rabatin vs. TBA
Ben Rabatin will look to build on his last outing, where he earned a win against Rhode Island after a tough start to the season. He carries a 5.54 ERA across 13 innings, and Sunday's MAC opener assignment represents a chance to solidify his standing in the rotation. Bowling Green's Sunday starter is still to be announced.
First pitch Friday is 3 p.m. at Schoonover Stadium in Kent, Ohio.
