KENT – Kent State Softball (19-24, 7-12 MAC) took both games of their doubleheader on Tuesday afternoon over Youngstown State University. The Golden Flashes bested the Penguins by final scores of 7-1 and 11-6 earning their second non-conference doubleheader sweep of the season.
Game 1: Kent State 7, Youngstown State 1
After the Penguins scored in the top of the first on a sacrfly, Aaralyn Nogay answered with a triple to center field and scored on a Caleigh Shaulis sac fly to tie it at one.
Kent State pulled away in the second innings. Ashlyn Porter led off with a single and following a Gabby Quinn sacrifice, Alex Trevena delivered an RBI single to score Porter. Trevena then stole second before Brooke Aberle doubled her home to put the Golden Flashes ahead 3-1.
Aberle added to that lead in the fourth with a sacrifice fly to score Porter, who had singled and advanced on a Leilani Johnson double pushing the advantage to 4-1. Kent State added two more in the fifth. Brynn Libler walked, stole second, and scored on a Megan Claerhout RBI single, before Johnson added a sac fly to plate Claerhout and make it 6-1. Shaulis capped the scoring in the sixth with an RBI double to score Nogay giving Kent State the final 7-1 margin.
Porter went 3-for-3 in game one. Aberle contributed two RBIs, while Trevena, Shaulis, and Johnson each drove in a run. Riley Miller was dominant in the circle, throwing a complete game and allowing just one earned run on four hits.
Game 2: Kent State 11, Youngstown State 6
Game two was a back-and-forth affair until Kent State put it away with a four-run sixth inning. The Flashes trailed 4-3 heading into the bottom of the fourth before exploding for four runs to take control. Brooke Aberle doubled to start the rally, and after walks to Libler and Shaulis to load the bases, Megan Claerhout delivered a three-run double to score all three to put the Blue and Gold ahead 7-4. Ashlyn Porter followed with an RBI single to score Claerhout and extend the lead to 7-4.
After Youngstown State crept back within two, Kent State delivered a knockout blow in the sixth. Shaulis singled and scored on a Porter RBI single, before Porter herself came around to score on a Gabby Quinn two-run home run to left field to punctuate the game with an 11-6 final score.
Porter was exceptional, going 7-for-7 in the afternoon's pair of games with four RBIs in game two. Claerhout added two hits and three RBIs, while Quinn's home run put the game out of reach. Ashlyn Porter reached base all four times she came to the plate.
Brynn Libler made her pitching debut for the 2026 season in relief for Alena Hillyard. Each of them pitched 2.0 innings of work. Riley Miller entered the circle in the fifth inning and closed out the final three frames, allowing just two unearned runs to earn her second win of the day and her 10th of the season.
