Golden Flashes Post Reverse Sweep to Beat William & Mary in Opening Weekend Finale

BLACKSBURG, Va. โ Kent State overcame a 2-0 deficit on Saturday and beat William & Mary in five sets to finish opening weekend at the Hokie Invitational with a 2-1 record.
Senior Mercedez Brown, junior Vanessa Imoh and junior Avrey Rigney led the comeback effort with seven kills apiece over the final three sets.
After dropping the first two sets by scores of 25-20 and 25-23, the Golden Flashes never trailed in the third or fourth. Led by a strong serve-receive, Kent State scored on 23 of 28 sideout opportunities and posted decisive 25-13 and 25-14 set victories to even the match.
The Flashes played fairly clean in the fifth with just three errors, meanwhile the Tribe totaled seven attack errors, two setting errors and one blocking error as Kent State went on to win 15-9.
Mercedez Brown and junior Nadia Miller led the way with an identical attack line of 13 kills and a .323 hitting percentage. Miller added a season-high eight blocks. Avrey Rigney posted her first collegiate double-double with 10 kills and career-high 12 digs. Senior Christina Vigil totaled 31 assists, seven digs, three kills and two aces. Juniors Lesley Furuta (11) and Hailey Brenner (10) both recorded double-figure digs performances.
The Flashes will be back in action next weekend and are scheduled for three matches at the UTA Tournament.
