Kent State Football Home Opener this Saturday Against Wofford

KENT, Ohio — Kent State football returns home for the first time in 2026 on Saturday, welcoming Wofford to Dix Stadium for a noon kickoff in a first-ever meeting between the two programs. The Golden Flashes (0-1) enter the home opener off a 57-0 loss at South Carolina and will look to reset in front of their home crowd, where Kent State knocked off Merrimack in its 2025 home debut. The Terriers (2-0) arrive with momentum, having opened the season with a 42-14 rout of The Citadel before surviving a 17-13 contest against Gardner-Webb last week.
Kent State Offense
The Flashes generated 179 total yards in their season opener at Williams-Brice Stadium, a modest output against a Gamecocks program that annually fields one of the nation's more formidable defenses. Quarterback Dru DeShields completed 12 of his 20 attempts for 63 yards and added 27 yards on three carries, finishing as one of the team's top offensive contributors. Running back Mason King led all Flashes in all-purpose yards (47), splitting his production between 26 rushing yards and two receptions for 21. Hunter Hopperton and Wayne Harris each contributed three-catch performances, and tight end Terik Mulder hauled in a reception for 11 yards. Getting into a third-down rhythm will be a priority Saturday, as Kent State converted just 5-of-14 in the opener.
Kent State Defense
Despite the lopsided final score in Columbia, individual bright spots emerged for the Kent State defense. Rocco Nicholl was disruptive from the start, recording a sack and a tackle for loss in his season debut, production that placed him 30th nationally and second in the MAC in sacks through one week of play. Nicholl and cornerback A'tiq Muhammad were tied atop the team's tackle chart at seven apiece, and linebacker Rafael Terrero Jr. contributed a forced fumble. Wofford's offense is built around the run, which sets up an interesting early test for Kent State's front seven.Â
Kent State Special Teams
Jake Stoeckel was one of the Flashes' most consistent performers in the season opener, averaging 46.25 yards on eight punts, good for 13th nationally and second in the MAC. Five of his attempts landed inside the 20-yard line, and two traveled beyond 50, giving Kent State a legitimate weapon in the field position battle. The coverage units will face their sternest early test of the season in Wofford's Ivory Aikens, one of the most dangerous return men in the FCS. Aikens returned a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown against The Citadel and owns a 51.33-yard average across three returns, best in the Southern Conference and second nationally at the FCS level. Da'Realyst Clark handled Kent State's lone kickoff return in the opener.
Scouting Wofford
The engine of the Wofford offense is junior running back Gerald Modest Jr., who has rushed 39 times for 192 yards and three touchdowns through two games, averaging 4.9 yards per carry and 96.0 yards per game. He ranks 13th among FCS rushers in yardage and leads the Southern Conference with three rushing scores. Quarterback JT Fayard has been a reliable game manager, completing 29 of 48 passes for 296 yards and two touchdowns. His top target is wide receiver Colby Alexander, who has caught five passes for 70 yards and two touchdown receptions. Terrence Honeywood adds four catches for 54 yards as a secondary option, and Modest Jr. himself is a factor in the passing game with 48 receiving yards on five catches.
Defensively, the Terriers have been stout and opportunistic. Wofford holds opponents to 13.5 points per game, third in the SoCon and 12th nationally at the FCS level, and has compiled 11.5 tackles for loss as a team, ranking second in the conference. Linebacker Wyatt Ward paces the defense with 18 total tackles, while defensive lineman Jordan Johnson has recorded a sack and four quarterback hurries. Wofford leads the FCS with four fumble recoveries through two games, a turnover presence that Kent State's ball-carriers and receivers will need to account for. Cillian Bonner rounds out a dangerous special teams group, averaging 46.63 yards per punt to lead the SoCon and rank fifth nationally.
