Kent State Falters to UMass for First Conference Loss

KENT, Ohio – Kent State Field Hockey was shutout by UMass for their first MAC loss of the season on Friday afternoon at Murphy-Mellis Field.

The Golden Flashes fell 0-7 to the nationally 4^th-ranked Minutewomen as UMass improved their undefeated record to 9-0. Although Kent State's overall record drops to 2-7, they head into Sunday's MAC contest with James Madison at 1-1 in the conference.

One of the biggest reasons UMass won the game was their control of offensive possession. The Minutewomen consistently had the ball in Kent State territory, putting up 31 shots in the game with 20 of them on goal.

UMass' Isla Campbell and Niamh McKenzie each led the team with six shots and four shots on goal each. Campbell had a pair of goals in the game, while McKenzie, Sophie Kent, Emily Barrett, and Kristy Leonard all had one goal apiece. The Minutewomen also had solid passing in the game with four assists.

The opening and final quarters included multiple sequences with two penalty corner saves by Kent State goalkeeper Michaela Skinner. The fifth-year defensive anchor gave up just one goal in the first and last quarters and had 10 saves in the game. Skinner saw a season-high 17 shots in the game.

Kent State defenseman Ryli Zee had her third defensive save of the season in the second half, increasing her conference lead in the statistical category.

Eva Usoz had the lone shot for Kent State off a penalty corner in the second quarter. The attempt nearly went in to tie the game, but it was saved by the left foot of UMass' goalkeeper Rozarie Mrazova at the last second. The momentum off the miss swung completely in UMass' favor as the Minutewomen scored four goals in 10 minutes to close the half out. UMass scored their last three goals in the third period which was too much to overcome for the Golden Flashes.

The Golden Flashes take on James Madison on Sunday at noon on the road in Harrisonburg, Va. The contest will begin to separate the MAC standings as both the Golden Flashes and the Dukes come into the game at 1-1.
