Kent State Opens MAC Play at Dix Stadium Against Ball State on Saturday

KENT, Ohio — Kent State football opens Mid-American Conference play at Dix Stadium on Saturday, welcoming Ball State for a noon kickoff in a matchup that carries significant weight for the Flashes on multiple fronts. Kent State (1-2) and Ball State (1-2) meet as mirror images of each other through three weeks.
For the Flashes, Saturday offers a chance to snap a four-game losing streak against the Cardinals, who have not fallen to Kent State since a 41-38 decision in Kent on November 23, 2019, and to end a MAC-opening drought that stretches back to October 1, 2022, when the Flashes knocked off Ohio 31-24 at Dix Stadium.
Kent State on offense
Quarterback Dru DeShields has emerged as the anchor of the Kent State offense and the most reliable source of production on the roster. Through three games, he has totaled 351 passing yards and 107 rushing yards, accounting for two scores on the ground, and leads the team with 152.7 yards of total offense per game, fifth in the MAC. Wayne Harris has developed into DeShields' primary option in the passing game, hauling in 10 receptions for 135 yards and a touchdown. Da'Realyst Clark is a playmaker in multiple phases, contributing seven catches for 105 yards while leading the team with 61 all-purpose yards per game through his kick return work. Mason King has been efficient on the ground with 105 yards on 20 carries, a 5.3-yard average, and Terik Mulder and Ardell Banks add steady secondary options in the passing game. Third-down efficiency and ball security represent the two biggest areas for improvement: Kent State sits at 40.82 percent on third down (fifth in the MAC) and has turned the ball over seven times, which will need to come down against a conference opponent.
Kent State on defense
The Flashes' defensive front has quietly become one of the conference's most feared units, and Saturday's matchup against a Ball State offensive line that has surrendered 8 sacks (2.67 per game), last in the MAC, sets up one of the game's most compelling schematic battles. Kent State has generated seven sacks through three games, tied for the most in the MAC at 2.33 per game, and has held opponents to just a 28.57 percent conversion rate on third down, second in the conference and 27th nationally. Rocco Nicholl leads the charge with two sacks and two tackles for loss, ranking first in the MAC and 43rd nationally in that category. Hayden Dawahare has been the most disruptive interior presence, recording three tackles for loss through two games, leading the MAC with 1.5 tackles for loss per game. A'tiq Muhammad leads the team in tackles with 17, Sayed Abuhamdeh has added 14 more, and Quan Rhodes-McKee has contributed two tackles for loss. The secondary has produced four interceptions as a unit, with Tanner Mintz returning one for 48 yards and Rafael Terrero Jr. taking another back 63 yards for a score against Wofford. The challenge Saturday will be containing running back TJ Horton, who has rushed for 208 yards and three touchdowns at a 9.0-yard average. Kent State has allowed 160.3 rushing yards per game through three outings, a number the Flashes will need to improve to win the line of scrimmage.
Special teams
Jake Stoeckel has been a consistent bright spot throughout the non-conference stretch, averaging 43.93 yards on 15 punts, 23rd nationally and third in the MAC, with six of his attempts landing inside the opponent's 20-yard line. Ball State counters with Cole Stumbaugh, who is also a capable punter at 43.18 yards per boot, fifth in the MAC and 33rd nationally. The Cardinals have been active in the return game, as Ace Cooper has averaged 19.00 yards per punt return, second in the MAC. Clark continues to handle return duties for the Flashes while kicker Sean Leonard carries the lone field goal of the season into conference play. Ball State kicker Brody Boehm has been the more productive of the two through three weeks, making all three of his field goal attempts, including a 54-yarder, and going a perfect 6-for-6 on extra points.
Scouting Ball State
The Cardinals' offense operates through Keldric Luster, who has completed 55 of 86 passes for 438 yards and three touchdowns while ranking seventh in the MAC in passing yards at 146 per game. Isaiah Thacker leads the receiving corps with 10 catches for 86 yards, Donovan Hamilton has added seven receptions for 70 yards, and Jamarion McDougle contributes seven catches for 77 yards as part of a distributed target tree. Jalen Bonds provides dual value as both a rusher (90 yards) and receiver (three catches, 36 yards, one touchdown). Ball State's third-down offense has been its Achilles heel, converting at just 21.21 percent, 13th in the MAC and 135th nationally, a statistic that directly favors a Kent State defense ranked second in the conference in third-down conversion rate allowed.
Defensively, Ball State has generated seven sacks to match Kent State's conference-leading total, with Anthony Pinnace (two TFLs, one sack) and Layton Starks (2.5 TFLs, 1.5 sacks) providing the most consistent pressure up front. Sterling Smith leads the team in tackles with 19. The Cardinals have struggled in red zone situations, however, having allowed opponents to score on all 12 of their red zone visits, a 100 percent red zone scoring rate that ranks last in the MAC.
