- Director of Player Personnel
Steve Schrum joined Kent State in January of 2018 as director of player personnel and will begin his second season with the Golden Flashes. Schrum oversees the evaluation and recruiting process of prospective student-athletes, coordinates official and unofficial visits and acts as the team's NFL liaison.
Schrum was a factor in the greatest season of Kent State football history. The Golden Flashes earned their first bowl win in program history with a 51-41 win in the Tropical Smoothie Cafe Frisco Bowl.
Schrum has utilized his knowledge of the national recruiting landscape and evaluating skill set to assist in Kent State's surge in recruiting during his first two years in Kent. With only 41 days to put a recruiting class together, he helped Kent State's class ascend from 12th in the Mid-American Conference to fifth by National Signing Day in February of 2018 according to 247sports. In 2019, the Kent State recruiting class was ranked the fourth best in the MAC by 247sports.
Schrum spent the previous year and a half at Syracuse as a recruiting quality control assistant at Syracuse.
For much of 2016, Schrum spent time in the Mid-American Conference, working as assistant recruiting coordinator at Akron where he managed their recruiting database and oversaw unofficial visit operations.
Prior to Akron, Schrum was a recruiting assistant at Northwestern where he screened prospects from the Northeast, parts of the Midwest, and helped administer the walk-on program.
In 2014, Schrum served as the assistant recruiting coordinator at Towson, where he helped the Tigers sign the No. 1 rated recruiting class in the Colonial Athletic Association.
Schrum attended the University of Florida where he interned for the Gators as an assistant to the wide receivers coach alongside Joker Phillips. He worked with Trey Burton and future NFL wideouts Quinton Dunbar and Demarcus Robinson. He earned his bachelor’s degree from Florida in 2014, studying U.S. history and political science.
During his summers while at Florida, Schrum got his start in player personnel and recruiting as an intern for the Baltimore Ravens. He helped manage NFL roster boards and scouting depth charts and assisted with football analytics for the 2013 Super Bowl winning squad.
In 2010, Schrum began his tenure in college football, working with the equipment staff at Maryland.
