KENT, Ohio --- The Kent State University football program has been recognized in this weeks edition of The Sporting News as being the Mid-American Conference team most likely to break out in 2004.
- The MAC has enjoyed a breakout season, with several programs reaching a new level, according to the magazines Dec. 15 edition. The next to join the fun should be Kent State. Coach Dean Pees has a new contract, and the leagues most exciting player, QB Joshua Cribbs, will be a senior.
- Kent State won two of its last three games this past season to finish with a 5-7 overall record and a 4-4 mark in the MAC, good for fourth place in the East Division. Among the Golden Flashes losses were an eight-point defeat to MAC champion and GMAC Bowl-bound Miami University and a nine-point loss at Motor City Bowl-bound Bowling Green State University. Kent State scored 30 or more points a school-record eight times, including each of the last six games under first-year offensive coordinator Doug Martin.
- The Golden Flashes return 17 starters nine on defense and eight on offense next season plus their starting placekicker and punter. Highlighting the returnees are Cribbs (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dunbar [D.C.]), who accounted for 3,125 yards of total offense and 29 touchdowns in 2003, and rising senior inside linebacker Eric Mahl (Monroeville, Ohio/Monroeville), who led the team with 126 tackles en route to All-MAC honorable mention.
