Laws Wins Copa de las Americas Tournament by Five Shots

BAYAMON, Puerto Rico -- Kent State University junior-to-be mens golfer Peter Laws (Mississauga, Ontario/Our Lady of Mount Carmel) shot a second straight 75 to win the individual portion of the Copa de las Americas 2003 June 28 at the Westin Rio Mar Beach Resort and Country Club in Bayamon, Puerto Rico. Laws also helped Canada win the team portion of the tournament by 11 shots over the United States.
- After a double bogey on the third hole, Laws regrouped with birdies on the fourth and eighth holes. Laws had three more bogeys coming into the clubhouse, but had a big cushion after starting the tournament with rounds of 70-69-75. Laws won by five shots over current U.S. Amateur Public Links champion Ryan Moore. He continues a hot summer started at the British Amateur, when he went into the second round of the match play portion. Laws also finish runner-up last week at the Glencoe Invitational.
- Team Canada was led by Laws and James Lepp, a junior-to-be at the University of Illinois. Lepp finished third overall with rounds of 75-73-72-75=295. The Canadians held off a United States team that featured Moore and reigning U.S. Amateur champion Ricky Barnes.
- Laws was a first team All-Mid-American Conference (MAC) performer this past season in helping Kent State to a MAC championship and four tournament victories in 2002-03. Laws also was named to the PING All-Midwest Region team and led the Golden Flashes with a 72.97 stroke average.
