KENT, Ohio --- Kent State University junior quarterback Joshua Cribbs (Upper Marlboro, Md./Dunbar [D.C.]) and sophomore placekicker Travis Mayle (Ravenna, Ohio/Crestwood) have been named the Mid-American Conference East Division Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week, respectively, for their performances in the Golden Flashes come-from-behind season-opening victory at arch-rival University of Akron, the MAC Office announced Monday (Sept. 1).
- Cribbs completed 25-of-43 pass attempts for 340 yards and three touchdowns as Kent State defeated the Zips 41-38 for the first time in six years. All his passing totals were career highs, and he also rushed for 57 yards on 15 carries. Cribbs directed the Flashes to 17 points in the final 3 1/2 minutes as they rebounded from a 38-24 deficit with six minutes remaining. He scored on a one-yard leap with 3:29 left and then threw a five-yard touchdown pass to redshirt freshman Antwan Smith (Laurel, Md./Meade) with 1:16 remaining to tie the game at 38-38.
- Following a 34-yard punt return by true freshman Jon Drager (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson), Mayle then kicked a 40-yard field goal as time expired for the victory. It was his first career game-winner at any level of football. Mayle also had a 37-yard field goal and hit all five of his PATs en route to 11 points.
- The Golden Flashes (1-0, 1-0 MAC) next will play at nationally ranked University of Pittsburgh (0-0) Saturday, Sept. 6. Kickoff at Heinz Field in Pittsburgh is 7 p.m. EDT.
