Women's Golf Visits State Capital for Lady Northern Invitational

Head Coach: Mike Morrow (Kent State '76)KENT, Ohio-Coming off of a runner-up finish at the Mary Fossum Invitational, the Kent State University women's golf team looks to keep the momentum going at the Lady Northern Invitational Sept. 27-28, in Columbus, Ohio. The Golden Flashes will compete at the par-72, 6,037 Ohio State University Scarlet Course as the returning 2002 champions of tournament.SCOUTING THE LADY NORTHERN: The 14-team field at the Lady Northern Invitational includes eight top-50 teams as well as eight top-25 individual golfers. In the latest Golfweek/Sagarin poll, Michigan State currently is the top ranked team, followed by Purdue (eighth), Oklahoma (10th), Wisconsin (16th), Northwestern (21st), Ohio State (37th), Texas (45th) and Illinois (48th). Malinda Johnson of Wisconsin ranks second, while Michigan State golfers Allison Fouch and Sarah Martin are ranked third and seventh respectively. KENT STATE FINISHES SECOND AT MARY FOSSUM INVITATIONAL: Kent State carded a third-round score of 301 to finish second behind host Michigan State University Sept. 21 at the Mary Fossum Invitaitonal. The Golden Flashes tallied rounds of 314-311-301 for a 926 aggregate. Junior Gabby Wedding (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) shot one-over 73 to finish tied for third with a 225 total. Sophomore Becky Wood (Derbyshire, England/Glossopdale C.C.) tied for 12th with rounds of 74-78-79=231. Senior Martina Gillen (Dublin, Ireland/Maryfield College) shot a 77 to tie for 21st. Katie Williams (Cambridge, Ontario/Galt Collegiate) shot an even-par 72 to finish tied for 43rd, while freshman Karen Delaney (Carlow, Ireland/Gaelcholaiste Cheatharlach) tallied a 251 composite for 75th-place.WOMEN'S GOLF RANKED IN LATEST GOLF WORLD COACHES POLL: The Kent State University womens golf team has been ranked in the Golf Worlds Top-25 Womens Coaches Poll for the third consecutive year Sept. 11. The Golden Flashes are 21st in the nation according to the poll. Last years Kent State squad won four tournaments, including their fifth Mid-American Conference (MAC) title in as many years. The team notched a top-10 finish in every tournament, with 11 of those being in the top five. In the postseason, the Golden Flashes posted a second-place finish at the 2003 NCAA Central Regionals and tied for 19th in their second appearance in the NCAA Championship. Senior Martina Gillen (Dublin, Ireland/Maryfield College) also was named of one of Golf Worlds Top 50 College Players to Watch for the third consecutive season. Gillen registered seven top-10 finishes and was ranked as high as 27th in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll during the 2002-03 season. She currently holds the school record in season stroke average (74.47), lowest rounds (67) and career wins (6), and is two top marks away taking over the top-10 finishes mark as well. KSU TIES FOR 19TH AT NCAA CHAMPIONSHIP: The Kent State University womens golf team concluded its fifth season May 23, with a 19th-place tie at the 2003 NCAA Womens Golf Championships in West Lafayette, Ind. The Golden Flashes made their second appearance in the national tournament shooting rounds of 324-308-307-317=1,256, tying with Florida State University. Junior Martina Gillen (Dublin, Ireland/Maryfield College) tied for 40th after shooting an even par 72 during the final day at the 6,225-yard Kampen Course. Sophomore Gabby Wedding (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) finished with a 309 aggregate, tying for 50th. Freshman Becky Wood (Derbyshire, England/Glossopdale C.C.) carded rounds of 80-84-79-79=322 for the tourney, tying for 97th. Senior Veronique Drouin (St. Agnes, Quebec/Davie {Fla.} Academy) and Katie Williams (Cambridge, Ontario/Galt Collegiate) tied for 115th place with a 330 composite score. GOLDEN FLASHES RUNNERS-UP AT CENTRAL REGIONAL: The Kent State University womens golf team finished second with rounds of 298-298-322=917 at the Firethorn G.C. in Lincoln, Neb. Senior Veronique Drouin (St. Agnes, Quebec/Davie [Fla.] Academy) shot rounds of 76-73-77=226, tying for ninth place. Junior Martina Gillen (Dublin, Ireland/Maryfield College) tied for 12th with rounds of 70-79-78=227. Sophomore Gabby Wedding (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) fired rounds of 76-72-83=231 for a 24th-place tie. Freshman Becky Wood (Derbyshire, England/Glossopdale C.C.) finished tied for 37th, while classmate Katie Williams (Cambridge, Ontario/Galt Collegiate) tied for 91st with rounds of 84-80-86=250.KENT STATE WINS FIFTH STRAIGHT CONFERENCE TITLE: The Golden Flashes shot a 302 in the final round for a three-round total of 888 and now have won the league title in each of the programs five years of existence, including the last four at Walden Ponds G.C. in Hamilton, Ohio April 27. Senior Veronique Drouin (St. Agnes, Quebec/Davie [Fla.] Academy) captured medalist honors with a three-over-par 219 and was named MAC Golfer of the Year as Kent State golfers swept the top three spots. She shot 71-74-74 for the tournament. With Drouins performance, KSU golfers have won all five MAC Championships dating to the first in 1999 and have been selected the leagues top performer each of the last four years. Junior Martina Gillen (Dublin, Ireland, Maryfield College), the 2001 and 02 MAC Golfer of the Year and MAC Championships medalist, was this years runner-up at the league meet. She fired a final-round 77 for a 223 total, four strokes behind Drouin. Sophomore Gabby Wedding (Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) placed third with rounds of 76-71-77=224, while freshman Becky Wood (Derbyshire, England/Glossopdale C.C.) tied for fourth with 75-76-74=225. Freshman Katie Williams (Cambridge, Ontario/Galt Collegiate) rounded out the Kent State lineup in a tie for 10th with 73-81-79=233. HEAD COACH MIKE MORROW: Head women's golf coach Mike Morrow (Kent State '76) has set the precedent and standard for the Kent State womens golf team. When your hear Kent State womens golf, you think success and tradition. The reputation has been there for only five seasons, but it still remains strong. A Kent State alumnus and former All-American for the mens team, Morrow took the reigns and developed the Kent State womens program from the ground up in 1997.Since the 1998-99 inaugural season, the Golden Flashes experienced immediate success. Morrow has guided the Golden Flashes to five Mid-American Conference (MAC) titles in as many years. He has coached five MAC Players of the Year, five MAC medalists, four MAC Freshmen of the Year and 22 All-MAC honorees, including 15 first-team selections.Morrow also has been named MAC Coach of the Year five consecutive times. After guiding Kent State to its first appearance in both the NCAA Central Regional and the NCAA Championships in 2001, Morrow was named the Central Region Coach of the Year by the Golf Coaches Association of America and the National Coach of the Year by Golfweek magazine.Morrow is assisted by associate head coach Donnie Darr (Kent State '96), who was a third-team All-American in 1995 as a member of the Kent State men's golf team. Herb Page (Kent State '74) is the Director of Golf for the men's and women's teams. In his 26th year as the head coach of the men's golf team, Page also helped form the women's program at Kent State. UP NEXT: The Kent State women's golf team heads to Franklin, Ind. Oct. 6-7, to compete in the Shootout at the Legends for the third consecutive season.
