After three scoreless innings, the Golden Flashes went on scoring rally as senior designated player Tracie Logars (McDonald, Ohio/McDonald) single to centerfield scored senior leftfielder Rachel Testa (Rootstown, Ohio/Hoban). After two errors by the Huskies loaded the bases, Ridenbaugh cracked a two-run single down the left field line. Ridenbaugh then stole second while junior rightfielder Abby Molnar (Loveland, Ohio/St. Ursula Academy) stole home to make the score 4-0.
Kent State recorded four more runs in the fifth as NIU hurler Amy West walked three of KSUs first four batters. Then Logar came to the plate and hit a two-run double to the bottom of the centerfield fence. Then junior third baseman Jodi Stevens (McCutchenville, Ohio/Mohawk) notched her second run of the game off a fielding error by NIU. Then a Ridenbaugh walk and a passed ball by the Huskies brought Logar home to make the score 8-0.
Northern Illinois avoided the mercy rule by scoring the lone Huskie run in the bottom of the fifth as Therese Harper tallied an RBI single down the right side, scoring pinch runner Kara Schurr.
KSU registered one more run in the top of the seventh as Ridenbaughs double scored Molnar. The Flashes finished the game with nine runs, which is their second-best scoring output of the season.
Senior pitcher Kate Leary (Pickerington, Ohio/Pickerington) registered four strikeouts as she pitched in her fifth complete game of the season. Logar went 2-for-4 with two runs, one double and three RBI while Ridenbaugh went 2-for-4 at the plate, including one double and three RBI.
Kent State plays Northern Illinois in game two of the doubleheader this afternoon (April 9).
