HAMILTON, Ohio - The Kent State womens golf team captured its seventh-consecutive MAC title this weekend at the 2005 MAC Championships at Waldon Ponds Golf Club in Hamilton, Ohio. Final round play Sunday was cancelled due to inclement weather, leaving the Flashes, who have now won the championships each year since the inaugural season of MAC womens golf in 1998-99, victorious after 36 holes. All five Golden Flash competitors finished in the top 10.
The Flashes now receive the NCAAs automatic bid to the NCAA Central Regional held May 7-9 in Lubbock, Texas. The official selection and seeding will be announced Monday.
Were obviously very happy, 2005 MAC Coach of the Year Mike Morrow said. Our kids responded and played very well through the conditions here this weekend. We knew coming in that the weather was going to be an issue so we wanted to come out and play well right away and ended up shooting our best round of the year in the first round. They could not have picked a better time to do it either.
Gabby Wedding (Sr., Wilmington, Ohio/Wilmington) took home MAC Golfer of the Year honors for the second-consecutive year, becoming the second KSU golfer to claim the honors two straight years. Tara Delaney (Fr., Carlow, Ireland) won MAC Freshman of the Year honors while coach Morrow took home his sixth MAC Coach of the Year trophy. Joining Wedding and Delaney on the 2005 All-MAC First Team was Becky Wood (Jr., Glossop, England) while freshman Kira Meixner (Richmond, British Columbia) was named to the second team.
The Flashes played through windy, winter-like conditions yesterday in round two, shooting a combined 323, the best team score of the day, remaining 13-strokes ahead of second place Ohio.
Cold temperatures, rain and heavy winds made the course conditions less than ideal, but the Flashes hung tough and played very well considering.
Wedding had the best day for the Flashes, firing a +6 78, the only Golden Flash with a score under 80 in round two. She moved up 10 spots to finish tied for seventh after she was tied for 17th Friday.
Delaney tied for fourth overall with her 71-81=152, Wood finished sixth with a 69-85=154, Katie Williams (Jr., Cambridge, Ontario) tied for seventh with an 73-82=155 and Kira Meixner (Richmond, British Columbia) rounded out the top 10 with her 74-82=156.
In round one Friday Kent State jumped out to a commanding 13-stroke lead and set a MAC Championship record low round of 287. Wood and Delaney led the field after day one and were one-two with a 2-under 69 and an even par 71, respectively.
The 69 for Wood tied the MAC Championship record for the lowest round score set by Wedding in the second round of the 2004 MAC Championships and was the lowest opening round score in championship history. It also was her lowest round score of the 2004-05 season and the lowest since her personal-best 67 in the fall of 2003.
