The Kent State wrestling team scored a resounding 3-0 victory at the Clarion Duals at Clarion University in Clarion, Pennsylvania on Sunday, December 17, 2006.
In the opening competition, Kent State scored a 22-17 win over the University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown. The Golden Flashes won three of the last four matches to secure the victory. Senior Chad Sportelli (Easton, Pa./Easton) scored a major decision (14-0) at 125 pounds. Sportelli finished the day with a 3-0 mark to raise his season record to 6-2. Redshirt freshman Patrick Lanham (Middletown, Ohio/Middletown Madison) registered his lone victory of the day with a 14-2 major decision over Brian Cook at 149 pounds. Junior Kurt Gross (North Royalton, Ohio/Padua Franciscan) scored a 10-8 decision at 157 pounds to give the Flashes a 9-6 lead. Senior Aaron Miller (Unioto, Ohio/Wapakoneta) began his day with a 5-2 decision over Eli Garshnick at 174 pounds. Miller finished with a 3-0 mark to increase his overall mark to 10-5. Classmate Ardian Ramadani (Garfield, N.J./Garfield) notched an 11-10 decision over Mike Fowler at 197 pounds. Sophomore heavyweight Jermail Porter (Akron, Ohio/Firestone) sealed the victory with a technical fall (17-2) at the 4:00 mark.
In the second match-up, Kent State registered a 35-3 victory over East Stroudsburg University. The Flashes won nine of the 10 matches including victories by sophomore Danny Micheff (Lorain, Ohio/Elyria) at 133 pounds, classmate Drew Lashaway (Bowling Green, Ohio/Eastwood) at 141 pounds, senior Jason McGee (Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio/Cuyahoga Falls) at 149 pounds, junior Joe Whelan (Sandusky, Ohio/St. Mary central Catholic) at 165 pounds, sophomore Eric Chine (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) at 184 pounds, Ramadani at 197 pounds, and senior heavyweight Willie Leonard (Chestertown, Md./Kent County).
KSU defeated Drexel University 24-8 in the finale. Lashaway, McGee, Whelan, Chine, and Porter each won their matches to pace the Flashes. Porter finished the match with a 2-0 mark on the day to raise his season record to 9-3.
Kent State will return to competition on December 29and 30 when the Golden Flashes travel to Greensboro, North Carolina to compete in the Southern Scuffle.
