Flashes finish 16th at Southern Scuffle

The Kent State University wrestling team finished 16th out of 32 teams competing at the “Southern Scuffle” Wrestling Tournament at the University of North Carolina-Greensboro in Greensboro, North Carolina. The Golden Flashes totaled 50.5 points and finished with an overall record of 35-34.

Sophomores Clint Sponseller (Glenmount, Ohio/West Holmes) and Eric Chine (Austintown, Ohio/Austintown Fitch) each finished sixth to take top honors for the Golden Flashes. Sponseller finished 3-3 at 141 pounds during the two day event. Chine, who competed at 184 pounds, also registered a 3-3 mark.

“We didn't wrestle very well today,” said head coach Jim Andrassy. “We weren't at our best and it showed on the mat. We have to regroup quickly and get ready for the duals at Cleveland State and Ohio State this week.”

Kent State (3-0, 0-0 MAC) travels to Cleveland for a dual match with Cleveland State University at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, January 3. The Golden Flashes then trek to Columbus for a dual match at Ohio State beginning at 1 p.m.on Saturday, (1/7).
