KENT, Ohio -- The Kent State University womens golf team is currently tied for seventh place after the first round of the NCAA Central Regional at the Traditions Golf Club in Bryan, Texas. The Golden Flashes are making their sixth consecutive appearance in the Central Regional and are vying for their first NCAA Championship appearance since 2003.
Kent State ended the round with a team score of 309 (+21), tied with Ohio State and just one shot behind Northwestern. Southern California and top-ranked Duke are in the top two spots, separated by just one shot.
Overall I thought we played well, but there were a few holes that we had high numbers on and that led to some high scores, said head coach Mike Morrow. This is a great course, but a very challenging course. It was as durable today as its going to be and teams still had some pretty high numbers. Thats very telling of how tough the course is.
Sophomore Mid-American Conference Player of the Year Tara Delaney (Carlow, Ireland/Gaelcholaiste Cheatharlach) is tied for 12th place individually with a solid opening round 2-over 74. Three-over through the first nine holes, she came back strong down the back nine with a 1-under 35, including a pair of birdies.
Tara played really well and had just one bad hole early, Morrow said. Shes right in the thick of things individually after a nice round.
Sophomore Kira Meixner (Richmond, B.C./Hugh Boyd Secondary) opened the day with six straight pars, but bogeyed the seventh hole and double-bogeyed the eighth. She finished the round at plus-4 76, tied for 20th place and one shot better than senior Becky Wood (Glossop, England/Glossopdale) who is 30th with a 5-over 77.
I thought both Kira and Becky shot very well, Morrow added. The top three scores- Taras 74, Kiras 76 and Beckys 77- were all quality scores on this course.
Rounding out the KSU scoring is freshman Kirby Dreher (Ft. St. John, B.C./North Peace Secondary) at 10-over 82. Junior Karen Delaney (Carlow, Ireland/Gaelcholaiste Cheatharlach) struggled to an 87 in the opening round.
The top eight teams and two individuals not on advancing teams qualify for the NCAA Division I National Championship May 23-26 in Columbus, Ohio. Kent States second round begins at 11:50 a.m. on Friday (May 12) off the 10th tee.
Tomorrow will be the key round for us, Morrow said. Normally, the afternoon is when the wind picks up and becomes stronger. Its must more tame in the morning, so we will have to play very well tomorrow to have a chance to move up in the field.
