Men's Golf Announces Endowded Scholarship Recipients

Kent States golf program scored a major championship by establishing endowed scholarships, thanks to the generosity and dedication of many fine people.
The 13 endowed golf scholarships were established with funds donated by: Kay and Doug Cooper, Steve and Patricia Cress, Dr. Doug Hanzel, Herb Kane, Chuck and Judy Messina, Bob and Barb Meeker, Geoffrey Meeker, Dennis Rango, Rich Rango, Lou Telerico and a group of friends and alumni. These endowed scholarships provide Kent State the chance to offer educational opportunities to the best student-athletes.
Each year, members of the Kent State golf team are awarded one of the endwoded scholarships. The honorees for the 2005-06 academic year are:
The Steven and Patti Cress Scholarship
Ben Moser, Freshman - Waterloo, Ontario
Major: Business Management
Parents: Dennis and Jody Moser
In 1996 Steven Cress and his wife, Patti, joined the group of loyal Kent State supporters by endowing a $100,000 golf scholarship. Cress is a 1972 Kent State graduate.
The Ben and Candace Curtis Scholarship
Ryan Yip, Senior - Calgary, Alberta
Major: Lesuire Studies
Parents: Jim and Elaine Yip
In 2004, British Open Champion Ben Curtis and his wife, Candace, endowed a golf scholarship. Ben, a 2003 KSU graduate, and the former Candace Beatty, a 2002 graduate are both former members of the KSU golf programs.
The Herb Kane ScholarshipPeter Ahn, Freshman - Victoria, British Columbia
Major: Accounting
Parent: Sangwung (David) Ahn Prominent Ravenna attorney Herb Kane was a long-time booster of the Kent State golf program. A 1947 graduate of Kent State University, Herb donated $35,000 to endow a tuition scholarship. Mr. Kane passed away in 2001.
The Chuck & Judy Messina Scholarship
Marc Bourgeois, Junior- Dieppe, New Brunswick
Major: Sport Management
Parents: Rheal and Maria Bourgeois
Chuck Messina, a 1966 Kent State graduate, and his wife, Judy, created a scholarship which is $75,000 in value. Messina is the president and CEO of T.H.E.M. of Ohio Incorporated, which is located in Cleveland.
The Dennis E. Rango Scholarship
Tom Ballinger, Sophomore- Mansfield, Ohio
Major: History
Parents: Scott and Michelle Ballinger
Dennis Rango (Kent State, 73) was a member of the Kent State varsity golf team during his college years. The Rango Golf Invitational, co-founded by Dennis and his brother Rich, generates more than $25,000 annually for the Kent State golf program.
The Richard C. Rango Scholarship
Tommy Wiegand, Sophomore- Avon Lake, Ohio
Major: Business
Parents: Thomas and Janice Wiegand
Rich Rango (Kent State, B.A. 70, M.A. 73) was a former baseball standout at Kent State. The Rango brothers have donated more than $350,000 to the Kent State golf program since the inception of their golf tournament in 1987.
The Lou Telerico Scholarship
Jarrod Page, Sophomore- Pylesville, Md.
Major: Marketing
Parents: Mark and Debbie Page
Alumnus Lou Telerico (Kent State 66) donated $45,000 to endow a Flash scholarship in 1994, which has grown to a worth of $475,000. He sponsors the Lou Telerico-Pro/Am Classic on an annual basis, which benefits the Kent State varsity golf program.
Friendsof Golf Scholarship
David Markle, Junior- Shelbourne, Ontario
Major: Business
Parents: Peter and Arlene Markle
Gifts and support from hundreds of former Kent State letterwinners and friends of the golf program established the Friends of Golf Scholarship.
