NASHPORT, Ohio -- Junior Kira Meixner and the Kent State University women's golf team jumped ahead of the pack after two rounds of competition at the 2007 Mid-American Conference Championships Friday (April 27).
Meixner leads Eastern Michigan University's Catherine Fortin by three strokes after totaling rounds of 71 and 74 to finish one-over par with a score 145.
Meanwhile, the Golden Flashes began their quest to capture a ninth consecutive conference title on the right foot. KSU has a commanding 25-stroke lead over second-place Eastern Michigan University heading into third round action, which will tee off at 7:45 a.m. Saturday (April 28) at the Longaberger Golf Club. As a team, Kent State fired rounds of 305 and 297 for a total of 602, good enough for 26-over par.
"We got off to a good start," said head coach Mike Morrow. "To shoot those scores under windy and wet conditions, we're really happy with the results of the first day. We're just going to go out and play our game and do the best we can to improve."
All five of Kent State's linksters cracked the top 10, and four reached top-five status after two rounds of action.
"We have a lot of talent on our team. They know how to win and they're very pround," Morrow said of his squad's dominance on the first day.
Junior Tara Delaney fired rounds of 75 and 74 to grab third place at five-over par. The defending MAC Medalist carded a total of 149.
Kirby Dreher mounted a comeback after a first-round score of 81 left her in a tie for 15th place. The sophomore rallied in the second round with a 74 to bring her total to 155, putting her at 11-over par and in a three-way tie for fourth.
Competing in her first MAC tournament, Maddi Swaney also improved her game in the second round to tie with her classmate, Dreher, and Western Michigan University's Erin Thorne for fourth. Swaney opened the day with an 80 to tie for 10th, but a second round of 75 allowed her to move up the leaderboard.
Senior Karen Delaney finished the initial day of play at 16-over par and in a three-way tie for 10th place. Delaney carded 160 with rounds of 79 and 81.
