Meixner And Dreher Lead Women?s Golf Into A Tie For Second At The Mary Fossum Invitational

EAST LANSING, Mich. - Kent State senior Kira Meixner (Richmond, B.C. / Hugh Boyd Secondary) and junior Kirby Dreher (Ft. St. John, B. C. / North Peace Secondary) led the field with rounds of 71 on the final day of competition to lead the Golden Flashes into a second place tie at the Mary Fossum Invitational.
Trailing Indiana University by seven strokes heading into the final round of competition at the Forest Akers West Golf Course KSU shot a tournament low, team round of 290, leaving the Golden Flashes into a tie for second with the Hoosiers. Both teams shot an even 900 for the tournament, which was won by four strokes by host Michigan State with a three round total of 896. The Spartans held a 12 shot lead yesterday after the first two rounds of play were complete.
Meixner's 71 moved her into a tie for second place and gave her a 222 score for the tournament. Dreher vaulted herself from a 15th place tie into a fourth place finish (224) with her final round of 71. Rounding out the top five finishers for KSU was freshman Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina) who shot a collective 225 in her first three collegiate rounds which gave her a fifth place finish.
Senior Tara Delaney (Carlow, Ireland / Gaelcholaiste Cheathariach) ended just behind Meixner and Dreher with a third round 72 that put her into a tie for 19th with a three round score of 230. Junior Maddi Swaney (Marietta, Ohio / Marietta) carded a 236 for the tournament following her round three of 78.
Michigan State's Laura Kueny shot a final-round 73 on Sunday to win with a three-round total of two-under par 214 (71-70-73), establishing a tournament record.
The Golden Flashes return to action on September 22-23 at the Lady Northern Tournament in Pennsylvania.
