CLEVELAND - A trio of repeat selections headline Kent State's four representatives on the 2008 All-Mid-American Conference football teams released Wednesday morning by the league office. Junior running back Eugene Jarvis, senior left tackle Augustus Parrish, senior outside linebacker Derek Burrell and sophomore free safety Brian Lainhart each earned a spot on the second team, in voting conducted among the MAC's 13 head coaches.
A year after being named to the first team, Jarvis was honored despite missing three games with a severely sprained ankle. The Pittsburgh native still managed to compile 801 yards and nine touchdowns on the season, averaging 99.0 ypg while scoring all but one of his touchdowns in six MAC contests. He was also KSU's second-leading receiver, making 25 grabs for 273 yards and a score.
On the second team for the second year in a row, Parrish was the elder statesman on a line that featured two redshirt freshmen, a sophomore and a junior college transfer. Nonetheless, the group paved the way for a rushing offense that led the MAC and was 11th in the nation, averaging 230.6 yards per game as the Temple Hills, Maryland, native started every contest for the second consecutive year.
On the defensive side of the ball, Burrell was a third team pick in 2007 when he registered a team-leading 112 tackles. He surpassed that total this year, making a career-high 119 stops to tie for second in the MAC and 15th nationally with 9.9 tackles per game. He also had 7.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks while forcing two fumbles and recording seven games with 10 or more tackles.
The only new addition to the group, Cincinnati native Lainhart had a breakout season for the Flashes, tying for the lead in the MAC and ranking sixth nationally with six interceptions (fourth in school history). He was second on the team with a career-high 106 tackles, while his 8.8 tpg ranked seventh in the MAC and tied for 38th nationally. The two-time MAC East Defensive Player of the Week forced three fumbles and recovered another, while tying for third in the MAC with 11 passes defended.
The coaches named Northern Illinois' defensive lineman Larry English as the Vern Smith Leadership Award Winner for the second straight year. The other specialty awards were selected by the MAC News Media Association and are as follows
Coach of the Year Brady Hoke, Ball State
Offensive Player of the Year Nate Davis, Ball State
Defensive Player of the Year Larry English, Northern Illinois
Special Teams Player of the Year Antonio Brown, Central Michigan
Freshman of the Year Sean Baker, Ball State
Kent State, which won three of its final five contests, completed the 2008 season with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-5 mark in MAC play.
