CLEVELAND - Kent State placed seven players on Phil Steele's All-Mid-American Conference teams, including a trio of defensive stalwarts on the first team. The highly-regarded college football publication announced its All-MAC selections Friday (Dec. 5).
Earning a spot on the first team were senior linebacker Derek Burrell (Richmond, Va.), junior defensive lineman Sam Frist (Southern Pines, N.C.) and sophomore free safety Brian Lainhart (Cincinnati, Ohio). Meanwhile, junior running back Eugene Jarvis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and senior left tackle Augustus Parrish (Temple Hills, Md.) were on the second team and junior defensive end Kevin Hogan (Chardon, Ohio) and senior cornerback Rico Murray (Cincinnati, Ohio) garnered third team nods.
On the defensive side of the ball, Burrell made a career-high 119 stops to tie for second in the MAC and 15th nationally with 9.9 tackles per game. He also had 7.0 tackles for loss and 4.5 sacks while forcing two fumbles and recording seven games with 10 or more tackles.
Frist had a standout season in the middle of KSU's defensive line, recording 38 tackles, a forced fumble and a fumble recovery. Included in his performance was a team-leading 10.5 tackles for loss, good for eighth in the MAC.
Lainhart had a breakout season for the Flashes, tying for the lead in the MAC and ranking sixth nationally with six interceptions (fourth in school history). He was second on the team with a career-high 106 tackles, while his 8.8 tpg ranked seventh in the MAC and tied for 38th nationally. The two-time MAC East Defensive Player of the Week forced three fumbles and recovered another, while tying for third in the MAC with 11 passes defended.
Despite missing three games with a severely sprained ankle, Jarvis still managed to compile 801 yards and nine touchdowns on the season, averaging 99.0 ypg while scoring all but one of his touchdowns in six MAC contests. He was also KSU's second-leading receiver, making 25 grabs for 273 yards and a score.
Parrish was the elder statesman on a line that featured two redshirt freshmen, a sophomore and a junior college transfer. Nonetheless, the group paved the way for a rushing offense that led the MAC and was 11th in the nation, averaging 230.6 yards per game as he started every contest for the second consecutive year.
Hogan finished the season ranked fifth in the MAC with a team-best 5.0 sacks (4.0 in conference play), pushing his career total to 17.5, which ranks third in school annals. He also tallied 43 tackles, 8.5 TFL and a forced fumble.
Rounding out the KSU contingent was Murray, who finished fourth on the squad with 72 tackles and fifth with 4.5 TFL. He also added an interception, a team-high seven pass break-ups, a pair of fumble recoveries and a forced fumble.
Kent State, which won three of its final five contests, completed the 2008 season with a 4-8 overall record and a 3-5 mark in MAC play.
