Kent State Takes Over Lead At Lady Puerto Rico Classic

SAN JUAN, P.R. Kent State stormed out in the second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic with the best team round of the tournament with a team score of 287. The No. 14 Golden Flashes are leading the field by one shot heading into the final round Tuesday. Lady Puerto Rico Classic. Hosted by Purdue at Coco Beach G.C., the 18-team field is comprised of 14 top-50 squads.
“Obviously to shoot under par as a team, we played very well today,” head coach Mike Morrow said. “We were able to stay away from posting too many high numbers today and I also thought the course played a little easier. It was truly a team effort from top to bottom.”
Individually junior Kirby Dreher (Ft. St. John, B.C.) and senior Kira Meixner (Richmond, B.C.) led the Golden Flashes' in round two, both posting 71's. Meixner is currently tied for second with Florida State's Caroline Westrup, as they attempt to chase down Arkansas' Stacy Lewis, who leads by three shots sitting at -6.
Kent State heads into the final round leading LSU by one shot with 18-holes to play. Kent State leads in large part to improved round scores by four of the teams five members. The most improved round belonged to freshman Martina Gavier (Cordoba, Argentina) who improved by eight shots in her second round shooting a 72 following a first round 80.
KSU senior Tara Delaney (Carlow, Ireland) and Dreher both sit tied for eleventh with two rounds complete and combined scores of 147.
“Our players are experienced and they know what's at stake tomorrow,”
Morrow said. “I don't really need to say anything they are looking
forward to the final round and wish we could go out and play right now.”
The three-day tournament concludes on Tuesday with the final round of action beginning at 7:45 a.m.
