Kent State Tied For Fifth After Opening Day Of Liz Murphey

ATHENS, Ga. -- One of nine teams within 12 shots of the lead, the 12th-ranked Kent State women's golf team finished the opening round of the Liz Murphey Collegiate Classic tied for fifth place at 303 (+15). No. 26 LSU leads an 18-team field that features 15 schools in the top 40, four of whom are in the top 10 including top-ranked Duke.
Seniors Tara Delaney and Kira Meixner led a solid effort for the Golden Flashes by posting matching rounds of 75 (+3) to stand in a tie for 11th. The pair is followed closely by juniors Kirby Dreher (76) and Maddi Swaney (77) and freshman Martina Gavier (78).
“I'm real happy I thought we had a good day against what might be the strongest field we've faced all year,” head coach Mike Morrow said. “I thought it was key to have all five players within three strokes of each other on a good golf course in tough conditions. Now our goal is to stay close to the leader tomorrow and see what happens on Sunday.”
Led by Megan McChrystal's low round of 69 (-3), the Tigers hold the overall lead at 297 (+9). Alabama, Georgia and Purdue each sit five shots back at 302, while the Flashes are tied with Auburn for fifth place.
Central Florida's Stephanie Connelly (71) and Auburn's Candace Shepperle (72) were the only other two individuals to shoot par or better on the day.
Kent State will tee off in Saturday's second round beginning at 9:50 a.m.
