Meixner Falls In Round Of 16 At British Amateur

NORTH BERWICK, Scotland - Kira Meixner, who recently wrapped up her career as one of the top players in Kent State women's golf history, won a pair of matches on Friday (June 13) before falling the next morning in the round of 16 at the 2008 Ladies' British Open Amateur Championship. The event runs through Sunday at the par 72, 6,242 yard North Berwick Golf Club.
In her opening match of the day, Meixner defeated Spain's Marta Silva, 2&1. She then went on to defeat Michele Thomson of Scotland, 1-up, in a match that wasn't decided until the 20th hole. The Richmond, British Columbia, native then had the tables turned, falling to Sweden's Jacqueline Hedwall Saturday morning by a 1-up score in 20 holes.
Meixner finished the 36-hole stroke play qualifier in 13th place after posting rounds of 76-72 (+4). Sweden's Caroline Hedwall earned the top seed after finishing at -4 (68-72). Former KSU teammate Tara Delaney (Carlow, Ireland) missed advancing to match play by a single stroke (155, +11).
Meixner carded a 75.0 stroke average on the season, helping the nationally-ranked Flashes claim their 10th consecutive Mid-American Conference title and their eighth straight NCAA Regional bid. Fourth at KSU in career scoring average (75.78), she turned in six top 10 finishes on the year, including three in the top three (one victory). Ranked 61st in the country by Golfweek, she was named the 2008 MAC Golfer of the Year in addition to earning first team All-MAC accolades for the third time. She fired a school record 66 en route to winning Lady Northern Invitational last fall - the fourth title of her career. A NGCA All-Scholar Team member in 2005, '06 & '07, she was named the 2007 Canadian Women's Amateur of the Year.
