EUGENE, Ore. - After a seventh-place finish at her national amateur championship last week, Kira Meixner continued her strong play this summer by earning the third seed for the match play portion of the U.S. Women's Amateur Championship at the 6,484-yard, par-72 Eugene Country Club. The top 64 players out of the field of 155 advanced from two days of stroke play.
A native of Richmond, British Columbia and a May graduate of Kent State, Meixner tied for the second-best round of the day with a three-under 69 in Tuesday's second round (Aug. 5). Combined with her 72 on Monday, the 2008 MAC Player of the Year's 141 trailed only Amanda Blumenherst (66-74) and Stephanie Na (69-71) who both finished at 140 (-4).
Starting on the 10th hole on Tuesday, Meixner birdied 13, 14 and 16 to make the turn at three-under. Back-to-back birdies on three and four put her in position to earn medalist honors in stroke play, but a double-bogey on the next hole would prove to be the only blemish on her scorecard for the day.
As the third seed, Meixner will square off against No. 62 Jennie Lee Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. PDT in the opening round of match play. Not the typical 62nd seed, Lee is a three-time All-American at Duke, a member of the U.S. Curtis Cup team and was a quarterfinalist at the 2007 U.S. Women's Amateur.
The U.S. Women's Amateur is one of the United States Golf Association's original three championships. It was first conducted in 1895, shortly after the inaugural U.S. Amateur and U.S. Open. The Women's Amateur has since been conducted every year except 1917-18, when it was temporarily suspended because of World War I, and 1942-45, when it was suspended because of World War II. It is one of 13 championships conducted annually by the United States Golf Association each year, 10 of which are strictly for amateurs.
