COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Ohio State's 14-stroke lead was too much for No. 22 Kent State to overcome, as the Buckeyes completed their wire-to-wire victory Sunday at the Lady Buckeye Invitational. The defending champion Golden Flashes finished second, 10 shots behind OSU.
“The golf course played really tough today,” KSU head coach Mike Morrow said. “Par was closer to 75 today realistically. I thought we played good team golf, but we were just a little too far behind to start the day. We still finished ahead of some pretty good teams though.”
The Buckeyes wrapped up the 54-hole event at the 6,228-yard, par 72 Scarlet Course with a 31-over, 895. KSU turned in a 905, while Washington was third at 911.
OSU's In Hong Lim claimed medalist honors, riding an opening round 68 to the victory as she finished at one-over-par, 217 just a single stroke clear of Michigan State's Laura Kueny.
A pair of Flashes finished in the top five, led by sophomore Martina Gavier's (Cordoba, Argentina) career-best fourth-place showing at plus-six (222). Senior Kirby Dreher (Fort St. John, B.C.) was two shots further back in fifth place her 14th top 10 finish in her last 20 events. Freshmen Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina) and Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) both tied for 17th at 231. Germino's first career ace at the 146-yard eighth hole highlighted her final round.
“We're starting to get more consistent play out of the back of our line-up and that's crucial heading into this time of the year,” Morrow said. “I feel good about next week winning our conference tournament is something we set as a goal and take a lot of pride in.”
Kent State begins its quest for an 11th consecutive Mid-American Conference title Thursday (April 24) with the opening two rounds of the 72-hole tournament at Longaberger GC in Nashport, Ohio.
