Defense Dominates Second Scrimmage

KENT, Ohio -- Kent State's defense was definitely the aggressor in the Golden Flashes' second scrimmage of the fall, limiting the offense to a punt return touchdown and five field goals Wednesday afternoon.
Junior defensive end Monte Simmons led the defensive charge with five tackles and two sacks - one of which went for a safety. Junior free safety Brian Lainhart and freshman linebacker Kent Walker both added five stops, while senior defensive back Danny Sadler and freshman linebacker Luke Batton both notched interceptions.
Senior running back Eugene Jarvis provided one of the few offensive highlights, returning a punt 93 yards for a touchdown. Meanwhile, freshman kicker Freddy Cortez banged in five field goals for the second straight contest and is now 10-for-12 in the two scrimmages. Freshman running back Dri Archer saw the bulk of the touches on offense, gaining 65 yards on 15 carries.
At quarterback, both sophomore Giorgio Morgan and freshman Spencer Keith were both relatively ineffective, combining to go 14-for-35 with a pair of picks. The offense should receive a much-needed shot in the arm with the return of sophomore Chris Anzevino within the next week. The starter at center in all 12 games in 2008, he has missed all of camp with an infection in his ankle.
