Jarvis Named A Candidate For 2009 Doak Walker Award

KENT, Ohio — Kent State fifth-year senior Eugene Jarvis (Pittsburgh, Pa.) has been named one of 45 preseason candidates for the 2009 Doak Walker Award. The prestigious award recognizes the nation's top running back.
After missing nearly four full games with a severe ankle sprain last year, Jarvis hopes to return to the form that saw him set the school season record with 1,669 yards rushing in 2007. A two-time All-MAC selection, his 3,268 career rushing yards ranks fourth in school annals behind Joshua Cribbs (3,670), Eric Wilkerson (3,830) and Astron Whatley (3,989). He also stands 732 yards from becoming just the 13th player in Mid-American Conference history to rush for more than 4,000 yards.
The Guaranty Bank SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will select the semifinalists on Nov. 11, and the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee will cast votes to determine the finalists, who will be announced on Nov. 23. The committee will cast a second vote beginning on Nov. 30 to determine the recipient. The National Selection Committee consists of former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2009 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on ESPN on The Home Depot ESPNU College Football Awards on Thursday, Dec. 10. The Doak Walker Award Presentation Banquet will be held at the Hilton Anatole Hotel in Dallas, Texas, on Friday, Feb. 19, 2010.
The award, in its 20th year, is named for SMU's three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
Kent State begins the 2009 season Thursday, Sept. 3 against Coastal Carolina at 7:00 p.m. in Dix Stadium. The Golden Flashes will have to replace three starters on offense and four from defense under sixth-year head coach Doug Martin.
