Another safety for the Flashes! 18-0 KSU with 3:35 left.
CC hands it right back on a fumble. 7:48 left with the ball on the Chanticleers 49.
Chanticleers drive all the way to the KSU 40, but a fumbled snap on fourth down gives KSU the ball. However, Morgan throws a deep interception.
With the TD, Jarvis is now eighth in career scores. Coming into the game, he was tied with former QB Julian Edelman. Jarvis is also third in career rushing attempts, passing Joshua Cribbs.
Jarvis TD from four-yards out! 11:57 remaining, Cortez adds the extra point. KSU 16, CC 0.
Morgan finds Simpson over the middle. First and goal-to-go Flashes!
Chanticleers answer with their own three and out. Jarvis with another punt return down to the CC 31. First and 10 Flashes!
KSU 3-and-out. End of the third quarter. KSU 9, CC 0.
Simmons with the sack and forced fumble. KSU recovers. Big play and first down at the KSU 39! Less than a minute remaining in the third quarter.
The Chanticleers starting to drive with two first downs. The break into KSU territory to the KSU 46. CC got it inside the 40, but a costly clipping penalty knocks them back. But a pass interference gives the Chanticleers a first down at the KSU 38.
Rinehart boots it 40 yards. CC fair-catches it at its own 16. An illegal formation on first down puts them back to the 11... 3:30 left in the third, KSU 9, CC 0.
KSU starting to have the flags out against them. 3rd and 21 at the CC 46...
Coastal Carolina three and out again and Jarvis returns the ball to the CC 45. Let us see what happens. Morgan had a somewhat shaky start but looked better in the drive right before half.
And on second down, Flowers takes it from five-yards out. Cortez adds the extra point. 7:49 left in the third, KSU 9, CC 0!
The Chanticleers should have just went for it. Jarvis takes the ball and returns it for first and goal to go for the Flashes off of a 34-yard punt.
Kent State stalls at its own 48 and Rinehart punts. In the air it gets to the 18 but takes a nice bounce and the Golden Flashes make a nice play to keep it out of the end zone. Coastal four and out.
And Kent State receives the ball to begin the half. On fourth and two, they go for it and the up back takes it, pitches high to Matt Rinehart. Rinehart stays calm, grabs it, and falls forward for the first down. Give him credit for not trying to do too much. Kent State trying to screen pass its way up the field.
There was nothing Cortez could do about this blocked kick...A Chanticleer goes up the middle completely unblocked and the return gives CCU a chance to take the lead with 2 seconds left...But the 44-yard attempt goes wide left.
On this 4th down, the Flashes elect to bring on Cortez for his first career FG attempt and Coastal calls 2 timeouts to try and ice him on the 22-yard attempt.
With time winding down Jarvis catches a screen pass and a swing pass to it down to the 6 with 20 seconds left.
Lainhart, the other defensive captain makes the interception on a tipped ball and the Flashes are on the move...It was the 9th INT of Lainhart's career.
Even when Mixon doesn't make the tackle, he forces the running back to change direction
Instead of electing to attempt a 44-yard field, the Flashes go for it and 4th and 6 and Morgan's pass to the end zone is incomplete.
Jarvis is obviously at 100% this season...he picks 18 yards and then another 19
In back-to-back 5-yard gains Jarvis made about 11 tacklers miss
In something that can only happen in the KSU press box- a large light cover randomly opens and scares everyone below it...It's still hanging by one end so Dave Carducci goes unharmed.
Jarvis is making his college debut as a punt returner today, but short punts and a penalty hasn't given him a real opportunity for a return yet.
Flashes' D comes up with another third down stop, this time at midfield
4th and 2 on the KSU 35 and Coastal elects to punt...It pays off as KSU goes 3-and-out
It's 2-0 after the first quarter...the defense has come up with big stops when needing it most
Morgan's next pass is picked off just in front of the goal line, but on the very next play Kevin Hogan gets KSU on the board tackling Coastal's running back in the end zone...The first safety for the Flashes since 2006 against Akron.
Morgan rolled to his left and threw right for a very impressive 37-yard gain to true freshman Tyshon Goode...We could be talking about this combo for the next three years
Jarvis starts the drive with a 14-yard run...A fumbled snaps sets KSU back 5 yards on the next play.
Quinton Rainey's offsides penalty on a 4th down keeps the Coastal drive going momentarily...The Flashes are then called for their third penalty on a punt return
Mixon has been in on every defensive play so far.
The student section is almost completely full behind the KSU bench.
Morgan's arm definitely adds a new element to the offense...He completes 2-of-3 passes before the Flashes are forced to punt, but it's a beauty from Rinehart...53 yards with plenty of hangtime
The Chanticleers can't take advantage of good field position and go 3-and-out.
True freshman Freddy Cortez did a great job in preseason camp, but his opening kick sails way out-of-bounds.
A message from Josh Cribbs and Abe Elam on the scoreboard pumps up the crowd just before kickoff.
Eugene Jarvis, Giorgio Morgan, Brian Lainhart and Cobrani Mixon who were recently selected as captains by their teammates head to the center of the field for the coin toss...Coastal will receive to start the game.
The press box spread is highlighted by a mystery soup that is way better than it looks...With some sort of shredded chicken? in it and a lot of spice.
The Marching Golden Flashes take the field...This is biggest KSU band we've seen in years...They form a giant "K" to play the alma mater.
Although KSU fans want to count this game as a W, Coastal Carolina has done very well in FCS (I-AA) during its first six years of existance...Last year's 6-6 mark was a disappointment for the Chanticleers.
Welcome to Dix Stadium for the 2009 season...This is just the second time in seven years Kent State plays its season opener at home.
It's 74 degrees with only a light wind...Most of the field will be covered in shadows for our 7:00 kickoff.
It is one of four games tonight for MAC schools who are all home (Ball State, Bowling Green, Temple) on the opening night for all of Division I College Football.
