Women's Golf Preview: Kent State Wraps Up Fall at Las Vegas Showdown

The Kent State women's golf team concludes the fall portion of
its season this week when the Golden Flashes participate in the
elite 17-team Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown at Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
Oct. 25-27. The tournament is hosted by UNLV.
This week marks the sixth time Kent State will participate in the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown. The Golden Flashes posted a second-place finish in 2005; last season, the team tied for eighth in an 18-team field.
Kent State starts the first round Monday, Oct. 25 at 8:50 a.m.

Scouting the Flashes
Senior Martina Gavier (Cardoba, Argentina) will meet up with the team in Las Vegas after participating in the 2010 World Amateur Team Championship in her home country of Argentina. Gavier and her country mates placed tied for 13th in the record-setting 52-team field, while Gavier finished 76th.
Kent State will travel take six golfers to this week's event. Joining Gavier on the team lineup are juniors Mercedes Germino (Necochea, Argentina), Shamira Marshall (Macedonia, Ohio) and Mandi Morrow (Kent, Ohio) and first-time team participant freshman Erin Hawe (Walton, New Zealand). Senior Sarah Bradley (Cambridge, New Zealand) will play as an unattached individual.
In Kent State's most recent event, the record book was re-written when both Gavier and Hawe shot seven-under 65s in the final round of the Mercedes-Benz Women's Collegiate Championships in Knoxville, Tenn. Both scores surpassed the previous individual round record of 66.
Scouting the Tournament Field
Kent State is one of 17 teams that will be participating at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown: Arizona, Arkansas, Colorado State, East Carolina, Idaho, Kent State, Louisville, Minnesota, Missouri, New Mexico, Oregon, San Diego State, San Jose State, UC Irvine, UNLV, Washington and Washington State. All 17 teams are ranked in the top 115 nationally, while 10 are in the top 50. Heading into the event, Arizona is the highest ranked team by Golf Week, coming in at 11th in the nation.

The Golden Flashes will resume their competition schedule in the spring when Kent State will take part in the Lady Puerto Rico Classic Feb. 12-15 at Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
