KENT, Ohio — Kent State Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen announced several changes to the football staff in the wake of head football coach Doug Martin's resignation that became effective following the conclusion of the Golden Flashes' season-ending victory over Ohio Friday afternoon.
Jerry McManus has been appointed the interim head coach for the duration of the search to find Martin's successor. McManus has served as the assistant head coach for the past six seasons. In addition, defensive coordinator Pete Rekstis (7th season at Kent State), linebackers coach Jim Fleming (1st season) and wide receivers coach Eugene Baker (1st season) have also been retained.
The four will handle the recruiting duties and day-to-day operations of the program until a new head coach is in place.
"Once again, I'd like to thank Doug Martin and his staff for the job they've done with the program," said Director of Athletics Joel Nielsen. "I'm confident that the staff we've kept in place will provide the necessary leadership for our student-athletes as we search for a new head coach."
Assistants Matt Edwards, Larry McDaniel, Richard McNutt, Terry Tilghman and Zane Vance will not be a part of the transition.
A national search is underway to find the 20th head coach in Kent State history.
